Singles’ Day Turns Into Shopping Day

As someone who has lived in China their entire life, I have been accustomed to buying cheap things. Living in the suburbs made it frustrating to travel downtown, with all the traffic and pollution, it wasn’t convenient to travel downtown just to shop. I then discovered online shopping. It was convenient, cheap and had tons of variety.

On Monday, November 11th 2013, China celebrated their Singles’ Day, this day has now turned into China’s shopping spree. The article quoted,“Tmall.com, one of Alibaba’s shopping sites, said Chinese bought 1.6 million bras, which it helpfully noted would reach three times the height of Mount Everest if folded and stacked.”

Because of this new Singles’ Day shopping spree, other online shopping website have jumped on the bandwagon . “Dangdang.com, another retailer, tried to get a jump on Alibaba by starting its 11/1 sale three days early.” Of course with something so huge, companies such as Nike, Adidas, Procter and Gamble, Samsung and Unilever have decided to use Tmall to sell their products. Singles’ Day in China has become such a big hit that Alibab plans to create a sequel. “Even as online retailers tally their ceipts from 11/11, some of them are preparing for another manufactured e-commerce event: “Double 12” on December 12.
