This audio recording or \u2018quasi-podcast\u2019 emerged from a deliberate concept. I wanted the content to lend itself to the medium and began by thinking, what can an audio recording relay that a written or graphic image cannot? Firstly, text-based writing removes or greatly hinders \u201cthe direct flow of oral discourse\u201d (Heim, 1987, as cited in Dobson and Willinsky, 2009, p. 287). Perhaps it is evident by comparing the unstructured way I talk to the way I write that my writing endures an immense amount of reworking \u2013 I can get obsessive over basic sentence structure. I\u2019ve learned from talking with my peers, that my average time spent writing is significantly more than normal<\/em>. Dobson and Willinsky discuss a literature review by Cochran-Smith (1991) that highlights a personal anxiety of mine, \u201cthe numerous instances in which more extensive but \u201cshallow\u201d or microstructural revising that resulted from word processing did not appear to improve the overall quality of the work\u201d (p. 288). Let\u2019s be honest, \u201cmicrostructural revising\u201d could be a skill listed on my resum\u00e9. With this in mind, I wanted my \u2018podcast\u2019 to be dialogic as opposed to authoritative or me robotically reading something I had written in advance \u2013 instead it would be a fun, free-flowing and improvised conversation. I think I succeeded in this, yet by the time the discussion ended, we were closing in on the 1-hour mark, so again, much editing was required to get the audio down to a podcast-appropriate length of 23 minutes (I apologize for the length!)<\/div>\n

Secondly, I wanted there to be a musical element to my podcast, since music is something that cannot be effectively relayed in text. I could write about<\/em> music, and theoretically, I could write and read musical notation, but to really understand a melody it needs to be heard. To incorporate music, I decided to attach a playlist to the items in my bag: each item translating to a specific song. The dialogue in the recording attempts to relay how I decided on a song, sometimes there is a clear connection, other times the path that gets me there is strange and wandering. It wouldn\u2019t be fair to call myself an audiophile, (especially in contrast to my partner, Hiller, who co-stars in the audio recording), but my musical knowledge has a notable depth and places me on the periphery of a few music-based \u201clifeworlds,\u201d (The New London Group, 1996, p. 70) perhaps the 60s psych enthusiasts? Lo-fi\/punk\/twee appreciation club? Resident indie fan? 90s hip hop day-tripper? Counterculture music historian? To me, it made sense to provide a glimpse into this part of me using the best suited mode.\u00a0 Ironically, Hiller and I provide our own vocal snippets of each song, so even though audio may be the most appropriate mode of communication, understanding the song may require some level of interpretation.<\/p>\n

The New London Group\u2019s (1996) concept of \u201clifeworlds<\/em> \u2013 spaces for community life where local and specific meanings can be made\u201d (p. 70), made me consider which of my lifeworlds I revealed in the initial What\u2019s in my Bag<\/em><\/a> task. I had emphasized an interest in aesthetics, smart design, and functionality, so perhaps it\u2019s evident that I am part of an art and design community or lifeworld, and maybe one can tell that I am a millennial. The Group\u2019s proposition of \u201ca metalanguage of multiliteracies based on the concept of \u2018design\u2019\u201d (p. 73) resonated with me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always felt that there is a close relationship between design and pedagogy. When researching how to develop my education beyond an initial BFA, I considered whether to move in the direction of graphic\/information design versus education. I view good design as a method of utilizing aesthetics to clearly transmit complex information in a way that is readily accessible. This is the same premise that led me to education: a desire to identify and design the best methods to communicate complex knowledge.<\/p>\n
