{"id":113,"date":"2011-11-07T01:11:37","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T08:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/maryakem\/?p=113"},"modified":"2011-11-07T21:09:25","modified_gmt":"2011-11-08T04:09:25","slug":"wherefore-technical-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/maryakem\/2011\/11\/07\/wherefore-technical-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Wherefore Technical Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I feel often that you as students think we are teaching you how to work in a technical services department.\u00a0 But of course we are not.<\/p>\n<p>This course looks to give you the FUNdamentals of the catalogue.\u00a0 How the artifacts of the catalogue record is made.\u00a0 But this is problematic to get. \u00a0To know more about how technical services works you have to get your fundamentals sure but we want you to know&#8230; What happens in there? \u00a0What are the rules by which the library collections and mandate come through?<\/p>\n<p>This is a list of how Tech Services represents themselves. \u00a0Needs improvement?<\/p>\n<p>A vintage consortia piece\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nla.gov.au\/librariesaustralia\/services\/cataloguing\/workflows\/\">http:\/\/www.nla.gov.au\/librariesaustralia\/services\/cataloguing\/workflows\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cataloguing standards for the British Library\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/bibliographic\/catstandards.html\">http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/bibliographic\/catstandards.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Penn State libraries\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.psu.edu\/psul\/cataloging.html\">http:\/\/www.libraries.psu.edu\/psul\/cataloging.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Policies like these are only a hint at the actual style guides within that set out local rules and protocols. \u00a0There are a set of triggers that say while you could just describe every item to the best of your ability, don&#8217;t do that. \u00a0It is important that libs of every stripe are conversant in this and finding out which collections get the total treatment and which are marginalized.<\/p>\n<p>But I guess I should not assume to limit catalogue metadata is synonymous with limits on access?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I feel often that you as students think we are teaching you how to work in a technical services department.\u00a0 But of course we are not.
