Latino-américa hoy

For today’s activity you will be finishing up our indicative tense review with a project! When you have completed today’s lesson you will have produced a short video clip on any topic related to a cultural/political issue surrounding Latin-American culture that interests you.

However, before we begin I want you to watch the following 4 videos that have been uploaded to my Zaption account. As usual, please take time to answer the questions thoughtfully as they address the concerns presented in the videos. These videos are by authentic Spanish speakers – so expect to have to listen to each part several times to figure out the answers. You will find the videos in the Latino-américa hoy folder.

When you have finished watching the video clips students I want you to spend 5-10 reviewing each of the links below. They are all in Spanish, so don’t spend too much time trying to translate everything, just work to get a basic grasp of what they are talking about. As you go through each site keep an eye out for a topic that grabs your attention. If can be on a celebrity, a cultural event (festival), or on a political issue. The actual topic is less important than your interest in it!

  1. http://noticias.univision.com/america-latina/ Californian Website covering Latin American news
  2. http://www.informador.com.mx/14/america-latina Mexican website covering news from within Mexico as well as other areas of Latin America
  3. http://elpais.com/tag/latinoamerica/a/ Spanish website covering local and world news

When you have selected the topic that you wish to cover, write out a 1-2 page (between 250-500) script in your own words, what the topic means to you. Focus on the WHo (quién), what (qué) when (cuando) where, (dónde) and how (cómo). As part of your script I will be looking for the background behind the story, as well as make a personal assessment of how this story has an effect on the culture/politics of Latin America.

Once you have have completed your script you will then create a either a video or audio recording of yourself, using the technology of their choice. (For information on apps/programs to use see the Resources page).

The finished product should include: a title, theme music, and credits – including the site where they retrieved the original story, as well as any other pertinent information

When you have finished editing your assignment upload the finalized file to your personal YouTube site (ensure that your parents have filled out, signed, and mailed to me a copy of the permission to use YouTube form) and share the link in the comment section below. After the videos have been posted your final portion of the assignment is to watch each of the videos from your class and, using the discussion forum give each post 3 feedback points – 2 positive, and one critical. Please remember there is a big difference between being critical and being mean. Please ensure that your critical comment is worded in a way that builds on common understanding and that the intent is to improve the product, not comment on the skills of the user. All negative comments will be deleted and you will not receive marks for having submitted the comment. Only helpful comments will be graded!

Good luck! This assignment is not an easy assignment, but it is possible to do in one day. However, please feel free to take an extra day if needed to polish up your finished product  – but if your assignment is late, I expect to see some polish 🙂
