{"id":7,"date":"2017-01-17T00:59:42","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T07:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/?p=7"},"modified":"2017-01-17T00:59:42","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T07:59:42","slug":"evita-peron-and-jorge-luis-borges-readings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/2017\/01\/17\/evita-peron-and-jorge-luis-borges-readings\/","title":{"rendered":"Evita Peron and Jorge Luis Borges readings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I began reading Evita Peron&#8217;s\u00a0<em>My Message<\/em> this week. \u00a0The first thing that stood out to me was the ease with which I could read her writing. \u00a0I think that her style ties in well with her message that she is a person for the people; her simple way of writing makes her accessible to larger audiences of varying levels of education.<\/p>\n<p>A few of her phrases also struck me as particularly notable. \u00a0On page 57, she writes, &#8220;Fanaticism turns life into a permanent and heroic process of dying; but it is the only way that life can defeat death.&#8221; \u00a0In general, I think her use of the term &#8220;fanaticism&#8221; is intriguing, since it is a word that can hold both positive and negative connotations depending on how it is used in context. \u00a0Evita Peron chooses to interpret the term in a positive sense. \u00a0This quote left an impression on me since it presents fanaticism as both the path towards dying and the way of overcoming death, which is rather contradictory.<\/p>\n<p>Her comparison of fanatics, enemies, and those who are indifferent is also worth mentioning. \u00a0Peron seems to oppose &#8220;the indifferent&#8221; more than she opposes individuals who she perceives as &#8220;enemies&#8221; of the people. \u00a0On one hand, this makes sense because at least enemies present stronger emotional sentiments and voice\/take action on what they believe. \u00a0In contrast, the indifferent show no passion one way or the other. \u00a0However, I still don&#8217;t think it is logical for her to so strongly oppose the indifferent in reality, since they pose an obstacle to her desire to empower the working people. \u00a0While the indifferent show neither support nor threat to her cause, I feel like it is practically backwards for her to speak more negatively towards them than towards those who are active enemies of the people.<\/p>\n<p>In the Jorge Luis Borges reading, I am confused about who\/what &#8220;the monster&#8221; is. \u00a0Since Borges writes, &#8220;What I didn&#8217;t figure on was that member of the opposing team, healthy patriotism&#8221;(p. 203), is the monster a dictator of some sort? \u00a0While the casual terms that Borges uses make the text more difficult to comprehend (since I couldn&#8217;t always tell when he was using one of his own terms and when he was using the real word for something), they also made me smile when I was reading. \u00a0Is he supposed to be portraying a particular ethnicity?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I began reading Evita Peron&#8217;s\u00a0My Message this week. \u00a0The first thing that stood out to me was the ease with which I could read her writing. \u00a0I think that her style ties in well with her message that she is a person for the people; her simple way of writing makes her accessible to larger [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":48161,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/48161"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7\/revisions\/9"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mayalast201\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
