Bowron Lakes (Part 2): The Adventure

Friday, June 26 we finished class and hit the road by 4pm. We had everything pre-packed and ready to be loaded into the car. When that final class ended, we raced to the car, picked up everyone else, and hit the highway. Driving from Vancouver to Bowron is a long journey. Estimated time is 9 hours to drive the 760km. We didn’t have to be at the lake until noon the next for orientation so we decided to make an overnight stop at Lac la Hache and make the rest of the lion kingjourney in the morning. The drive was made significantly shorter thanks to the sing along playlist of Disney songs. I was impressed at how well we mastered “I Just Can’t to be King” from the Lion King (Click on the image).

We had a very early start on the Saturday and made it to the provincial park site with plenty of time.  We rented our canoes and paddle gear from Becker’s Lodge, conveniently located on the lake. After being outfitted, we were ready to go for the epic 6 day journey.
IMGP0087Lets meet the team. Our paddle group consisted of my buddy Nick, Dan and Anna, a couple that are close friends of Nick’s (who are now friends of mine), and myself. None of us had much paddling experience before this trip but we knew the calm waters of the Bowron Lakes would not be any trouble.

For the seven portages of the trip, we decided to rent wheels for the our canoes. We considered carrying our canoes like true rugged adventurers but for the type of trip we planned. This was going to be a trip taken on the leisure side, looking to escape, see some wildlife, and enter the tranquil waters that the Bowron Lakes offer.

IMGP0255 (1)In other words, we did not conserve weight. We packed luxuries that aren’t normally brought when packs have to be carried on backs. We were gracious in our food planning. We took liberties of the fact we weren’t carrying our weight in that we would eat well, extremely well. During our trip, we ate eggs and bacon, fajitas, currie, chilli, steaks (from the keg), pasta, and much more. I ate better than I normally do at home. How did we keep everything from getting spoilt? We were careful in our food planning, freezing our meat, keeping everything in soft coolers and only accessing it when we needed to. It worked brilliantly over the 6 days.

Bowron Lakes (Part 1): The Lead In

Bowron Lake MapMy latest adventure was one of the BC classics outdoor adventures. It is recognized as being a bucket-list topper for most Canadians. People come from all over the country to experience the Canadian wild in this unique experience. Of course, I speak of the world-renowned Bowron Lakes. Outdoor magazine has ranked it as one of the top ten canoe trips in the world. One website describes Bowron as “a quintessentially Canadian canoe trip. Azure lakes surrounded by the majestic glaciated peaks of the Cariboo mountains impart serenity deep into ones soul with every dip of the paddle.”

bowron-cariboo2Bowron Lake Park is located in the Cariboo Mountains, about 120 km east of Quesnel. The circuit contains string of 9 or 10 lakes (1 optional lake) spanning over a 116 km. The suggested time to complete the circuit is 6 to 10 days. The circuit could easily be completed in a shorter time frame but to truly enjoy the trip and soak in the scenic beauty of the Bowron Lakes, spending 6 or more days on the lakes is the way you go. If you are looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure with intense physical exertion, this isn’t the trip for you. The Bowron Lakes is an amazing place where you can fully immerse yourself in nature; where it is just you, your canoe, and the wild (and a few close friends to share the experience).

I was fortunate enough to have a friend who had booked this trip the moment the bookings became available on January 2. With both of us in the intense BEd program at UBC, there was only a single, one-week window when UBC’s program has a week break could fit in this trip with our busy schedule. So after January 2, we knew what we were doing for the week of June 26 to July 4th.

This trip was not like my other adventures in the past. Usually, I’m a meticulous planner when it comes to finding adventure. I have a problem with going into a trip without a plan. I cringe at the idea of possibly missing out on a opportunity that I didn’t know about. But leading up to our departure date, we were all preoccupied with school and work to do much research. We were lacking info like what campsites to stay at, what are the best times to paddle, how should we pack, and where is the best places to see wildlife. None of us had more than two days of paddling experience. We going in to this epic trip inexperiences, underprepared but excited and ready for adventure.
