{"id":47,"date":"2015-06-17T09:01:44","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T00:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mcelroy0565a\/?p=47"},"modified":"2015-06-17T09:02:19","modified_gmt":"2015-06-17T00:02:19","slug":"benoit-cast-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mcelroy0565a\/2015\/06\/17\/benoit-cast-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Benoit Cast Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"c7\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"h.fdai3jn4kuy4\"><\/a><span class=\"c8\">Case Study #1<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"c11 c20\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"h.5aw1ds63tjmq\"><\/a><span class=\"c10 c0 c17\">Moodle<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <span class=\"c10\">Beno\u00eet is a sessional instructor in the English department of a large, research-intensive university. Previously he has used WebCT Vista to disseminate lecture notes and readings for his face-to-face Business Writing course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <span class=\"c10\">His department head has approached him about offering an online version of Business Writing. However, WebCT Vista is no longer available at his university and Beno\u00eet must choose either Blackboard Learn (a new, enhanced version of WebCT Vista) or Moodle. Blackboard Learn is the university\u2019s &#8220;official&#8221; LMS and has university-wide IT support, but the Help Desk is difficult to get a hold of and can be very slow in responding to email. Moodle is hosted within the Faculty of Arts, but operates as a stand-alone tool with no real technical support: instructors need to set up their own courses from scratch. More and more faculty and instructors in the English Department now use Moodle, since it isn\u2019t administered by IT support: less paperwork, less red tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\">\u00a0<span class=\"c10\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Beno\u00eet is very comfortable in the design mode of WebCT Vista; he has also done some general web design, mostly for personal use. In terms of web design he has developed content, uploaded it via FTP and then left it there. He has heard from colleagues that Blackboard Learn is dreadful, that doesn\u2019t have half the functionality of WebCT Vista, though he has not yet had time to do any evaluation himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span class=\"c10\">Because of his teaching load, Beno\u00eet estimates he could spend up to 5 hours a week developing the online version of Business Writing. The course would go live next semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c11 c13\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"h.z73i4elhyykg\"><\/a><span class=\"c16\">Moodle for Beno\u00eet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c11\">The first thing that Benoit needs to do is to apply the SECTIONS or Seven Principals method to his decision making process. \u00a0Using one of these tools will help Benoit take the guesswork out of his choice and to allow him to make the best choice for himself, his course and his students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c11\">An important question Beno\u00eet needs to ask himself as he moves to an LMS from a face-to-face learning is \u201cWhat kind of information and experience am I trying to offer to my students and which system gives me the features and flexibility for all participants in my course to interact in a meaningful and efficient way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c11\">Benoit should evaluate what information and or content is most important to the core ideals\/message of what he is trying to teach is most important to the success of his course. This is an important question because content is the most important aspect to a course and should dictate the tools being used and not the other way around. \u00a0Too often, educators get excited about a new technology and choose the tool first, \u00a0then they attempt to make the content \u2018fit\u2019 which often leads to the course failing because the core is lost to fashion over function.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c11 c13\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"h.uetspn3xlke0\"><\/a><span class=\"c16\">\u201cBusiness Writing Online\u201d Launch Time Frame<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c11\">I think that it might take Benoit about 25 hours to transfer his offline course to an online LMS. \u00a0Since he can contribute 5 hours a week it would take about 5 weeks for him to do this task. \u00a0The rest of this time frame makes the assumption that Benoit will choose<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2 c9\"><a class=\"c6\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wop3FMhoLGs\" rel=\"nofollow\">Moodle<\/a><\/span>\u00a0as his LMS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c11\"><strong><span class=\"c0\">Week 1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c18 lst-kix_pc0p5mdxbtwk-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1\">research the features of the Moodle LMS features using the SECTIONS method. \u00a0Moodle has extensive<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2 c9\"><a class=\"c6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JsUz1DMg-24&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;list=PLxcO_MFWQBDclJEctfdxCFeo8QuyR1Hw_\" rel=\"nofollow\">videos<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0and <span class=\"c2 c9\"><a class=\"c6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.moodle.org%2F26%2Fen%2FFeatures&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNFk3h_7LgPmxhMDyq0Hu4sFruC93w\" rel=\"nofollow\">documents<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0<\/span>online to aid Benoit<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">create a plan of attack on what resources he needs for his course and the best way to structure his moodle page.<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">Being modular, Moodle is very easy to tailor to any instructors needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c11\"><strong><span class=\"c0\">Week 2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c18 lst-kix_oeghua4tuzsj-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1\">begin to upload core documents to Moodle and layout the course structure.<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">replace any material that does not transfer from analog by creating digital content (audio, video, links)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c11\"><strong><span class=\"c0\">Week 3<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c18 lst-kix_sz5v6t31wbjt-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1\">install LMS site or access existing LMS site,<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">develop the general site (theme, navigation, permissions, calendars, announcements, etc),<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">learn and experiment with basic orientation to structure, layout and interface,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c11\"><strong><span class=\"c0\">Week 4<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c18 lst-kix_wt73j1dgo2w5-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1\">fine tune the layout of the site and begin to test for problems in navigation of the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c11\"><strong><span class=\"c0\">Week 5<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"c18 lst-kix_7pp2wxjyr5sy-0 start\">\n<li class=\"c1\">test site as both instructor and as student,<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">troubleshoot and fine tune,<\/li>\n<li class=\"c1\">publish completed site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Case Study #1 Moodle \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Beno\u00eet is a sessional instructor in the English department of a large, research-intensive university.
