For Assignment 2 for ETEC 532 I worked with a group on creating an introductory module using Moodle as our learning management system. I had worked briefly with Moodle on a previous course, however for this assignment I was able to work more in depth with the platform. On both occasions I have had difficulty logging into the site. It illustrates why it is useful to have IT support when problems arise. Once I was able to get into the site, with the help of Teacher Training Videos I was able to begin set up the architecture. Using the mini tutorial provided by the course I was able to create buttons to navigate through the course. I found it interesting that you needed to create a way to insert buttons into the program to make it more functional. I found that the breadcrumb trail used by Moodle might not be clear enough for elementary students. I initially used images for icons to represent the different modules for the course. However, I found that the look was not unified enough so I found a collection of circular vector icons that were open source and free. The unified look made the course more professional looking. I also needed a header for each page to again give the site a unified look. I used an icon I found online and modified the text font to match the one used in the site. With my group we decided on a topic that we could use in an elementary school context. The course was envisioned as a way to provide students with the tools to be responsible digital citizens. At the conclusion of the course the students would have a test that would give them their digital drivers license. Through collaboration on Google docs we were able to share ideas and make decisions about what our LMS would look like.
One issue that we had was trying to access the different tools available on Moodle as a student. It appears that the view available as an administrator, when you switch to student view is different to what is presented when logging in as a guest. We were concerned about what guest would able to view when they visited the site.
