My work, titled Odysseus and the Sirens, is meant to coalesce multiple aspects of the class, juxtaposing different theories and ideas to potentially reveal new and interesting meanings. Specifically, this work is commenting on papers by Horkheimer and Adorno and Friedrich Kittler. To create Odysseus and the Sirens, I began by translating the expert of the Homeric text which describes Odysseus’ run in with the Sirens into binary code through an online program. This binary code was then pasted onto a photoshop canvas, where it was shrunken down to fit on a single page. The result is a somewhat disorienting site that resembles television noise or a strange pattern that is best seen when looking from afar. The binary text is also only visible when looking at the piece close up, yet even then, it is unclear what the code is saying to all but those fluent in binary code – which is likely just the computer on which the work was created and is now being viewed.
