Please check back in fall 2019 to sign up next year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About MEED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The MEED (Modules in Ecology and Evolution Development)\u00a0 program through <a href=\"https:\/\/ubclts.com\/\">Let&#8217;s Talk Science UBC<\/a> provides hands-on\u00a0learning in ecology and evolution to local K-12 students through\u00a0modules\u00a0(experiential classroom learning activities) developed by trained UBC graduate students and postdocs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Student participants attend workshops on outreach\u00a0and science communication, meet with their teacher partner, and ultimately deliver a module (lesson) in the classroom. Lessons topics are typically selected by the teacher and student to align with the provincial curriculum and the student&#8217;s area of expertise. See examples of past modules <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/meed\/teaching-resources\/modules\/\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our program specifically targets ecology and\u00a0evolution education due to the importance of these disciplines to understanding\u00a0current problems such as the loss of biodiversity with climate change, the spread of\u00a0invasive species, and the vulnerability of species at risk .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Volunteer Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Modules in Ecology and Evolution Development program with Let&#8217;s Talk Science is looking for graduate student or postdoc volunteers to present one-hour ecology and\/or evolution modules (lessons) related to their own research to Kindergarten to Grade 12 students!<\/p>\n<p>This program runs from October to March and brings together teachers and researchers for science outreach to classrooms. Students will be paired with one teacher from any grade level (K-12) you are comfortable with and together you will discuss the module that you wish to present to the students.<\/p>\n<p>The total time commitment is 10 to 20 hours over the school year and includes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Tuesday October 30, 2018, 4:00 &#8211; 6:00pm: Orientation and instructional training (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/meed\/events\/\">Workshop 1<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>November \u2013 January: Meet with teacher and create module<\/li>\n<li>Late January\/early February: Check-in and feedback session regarding your modules with all MEED participants (Workshop 2).<\/li>\n<li>February \u2013 April: Go into the classroom and present your module!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Please contact us at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:meed@ubclts.com\">meed@ubclts.com<\/a>\u00a0if you have any questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Registration is now closed for the 2018 &#8211; 2019 school year.
