Lesson Plans
Short Practicum: Grade 8 Wheel: Theory test review
Music Jeopardy
I created this game to review the content for their final exam. The answers are all either answers to or questions on their exam.
Unit Plans
Sight Singing and Audiation
I developed this unit plan with fellow UBC Teacher Candidates Ashley Hanna and Kim Taylor. As singers ourselves, we created games and activities to teach fundamentals of pitch relationship and audiation to vocalists with varying understandings and skills. All games can be adapted to incorporate additional/other fundamentals, make them more challenging, or just completely change them up.
Hand Drum Making
This is a great unit plan for interdisciplinary interaction. I presented as part of the UBC Aboriginal Education summer course, and garnered interest from the tech ed and business students also in the class. This can incorporate tech ed, business, planning, history, English, even theatre. It is also a good opportunity to invite local First Nations specialists, elders, and/or performers to participate in the process of making a drum and an initiation ceremony and/or performance. And at the end, the students have really awesome drums.
Though I built this unit plan based on a Coast Salish approach described by Jorge Lewis on Nanaimo, BC, I built the unit flexible enough to plug in any tradition. One could take the same unit plan and apply to any region of Canada, or even another country completely. I intend for this to be a portable, easily adaptable lesson.
