In this article the author pointed out a phenomenon that email is more likely opened on mobile device but that does not mean the desktop is no longer needed. The article includes some email campaigns on different devices with the analysis.
The data shows that in 2013 the mobile device has become the most popular environment for the subscriber’s first interaction with an email, nearly 90% of all mobile devices where the email is first opened are Apple devices and iPhone is the most common device. Use an iPhone to set an email account is not difficult and after the account is set, it is very convenient to check the email. No doubt that mobile device could be the first choice for people to open the email. But not all would have clicks when they first open the email on the mobile device.
For the desktop client, Outlook takes a great part, but different versions of Outlook have different problems, which could cause many troubles for people. Maybe you can open the email with old version, but if you open the same email with newer version on the other computer, some parts of the email might not be shown. But when an email is opened second time on the computer, clicks are like to happen. The browser of the mobile device might be the reason as on the computer more moves could be made and the interface is large. Maybe in the future iPad could take the place of computer when people want to open a link of the email as the increasing size of iPad’s screen.
