The Very Hungry Caterpillar

After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I noticed that it has cross-curricular connections in: Social Studies, PE, Art, Health, and Language Arts. This caused me to create a mini unit plan, 5 lessons, on this book. The students really enjoyed the activities and reading the book. I have attached the unit plan as well as a detailed layout of the lesson plans that I created.

Students Who Don’t Participate

·         During think pair share quiet students may specifically be called on to share their ideas

·         Students will be asked their thoughts on a question even if they do not have their hand up. This will ensure that all students are actively engaged in thinking of an answer.

·         Allow students to talk with a partner first to ensure their ideas are validated before sharing with the entire class.

 

ELL Learners

·         ELL learners will be paired with non- ELL learners in order to be forced to speak English to get their ideas across

 

Different Learning Abilities

·         The teacher will scaffold the lessons in order to provide easier and harder ways of doing an activity.

1.      The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson #1

(1 lesson)

 

Plants and animals have observable features Students will be able to label, communicate, and locate the names of the body parts of caterpillars. Hook: (10 minutes)

Display the book and invite children to describe the caterpillar. Ask Students: Does he look happy? How do you think the artist made this caterpillar? Read aloud the title and ask: Why do you think the caterpillar is so hungry? The teacher will then read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, By: Eric Carle aloud to the class to get students excited about the topic of caterpillars.

 

Learning Engagements: (20 minutes)

·         Students will discuss with the class what they enjoyed about the book

·         Students will then be tasked with creating their very own hungry caterpillar

·         Teacher will demonstrate art activity which consists of having one caterpillar head and 5 body parts

·         First the students glue on, carefully, the body parts, then they can add feet, eyes, etc. with pastels

·         The special helper will hand each student a piece of paper

·         The cut up circles and crayons will already be at table groups

·         The teacher will walk around and assist any student that needs help or is struggling

·         Students are free to be creative with their caterpillar, different colours, number of body parts

·         When students are finished they need to identify the correct location for the eyes, head, and feet

2.      The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson #2

The students will watch the youtube video telling the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY

 

Learning Engagements: (15 minutes)

·         Students will discuss what they liked about the movie with the class

·         The teacher will introduce the song: The Little Caterpillar by singing it alone one time through and pointing to the words with a pointer as she sings it, the students will follow along

·         The second time through the students sing while looking at the chart paper with the words, the teacher will point to each word with a pointer as it is read

·         The third time through the teacher will show the actions for each line while the students and teacher sing the words

·         The fourth to sixth time through the students and teacher will do the actions and sing the song

·         A student can be chosen for the fifth and sixth time to point to the words with the pointer/ singalong as the rest of the class sings along and does the actions

3.      The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson #3

          (1 lesson)

 

 

 

Numbers represent quantities that can be decomposed into smaller parts. Students will be able to :

·         Recall parts of a story

·         Use pictures to represent a story

·         Recall days of week

·         Count to 10

·         Identify various food items

Hook: (6 minutes)

The teacher will read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, By: Eric Carle again, aloud to the class. Before it is read it is important that the teacher tells the students that they need to remember what day the caterpillar ate what food and how many of each food.

 

Learning Engagements: (40 minutes) – resource help

·         Give out the 7 days of a week cards to 7 random students, ask the class what day of the week comes first, have that student come up, continue this process until all cards are up

·         Once finished have the class read them aloud in order

·         Teacher will ask students what did the caterpillar eat on Monday…. How many?

·         The student who answered can come up and place the items next to Monday

·         This will continue until all the days of the week are full, teacher can use book as a reminder if students forget

·         The teacher can then ask math questions based on the information: How many things does he eat on Friday? How many more things does he eat on Friday than Thursday? How do you know?

·         The teacher will then explain to the student that they will make their own Very Hungry Caterpillar Book

·         The teacher will model how the booklet should be completed to the class

·         The teacher will write the words they need to have in their book on the board in big letters, so they can refer to if need be

·         The special helper will hand out the booklets to the students

·         The teacher will walk around and ensure students have: their name, correct number of items per page, correct spelling of words, correct colours of food

4.      The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson #4

            (1 lesson)

 

Knowing about our bodies and making healthy choices helps us look after ourselves . Students will be able to

·         Identify the names of food items

·         Categorize healthy and unhealthy foods

Hook: (10 minutes)

·         Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar aloud to the class. The students can help the teacher read the page by indicating what food item comes next and how much of it

 

Learning Engagements: (30 minutes)

·         The teacher will then ask the students if the hungry caterpillar ate healthy foods or unhealthy foods.

·         What makes foods healthy or unhealthy? Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and other good stuff for us! We should make sure to eat plenty of fruit and plenty of vegetables! Nutritionists all agree that refined sweeteners (sugar) and refined grains (white flour) are not good for us, so things like pies, cakes, and candies should be limited to sometimes foods.

·         Give each student a card with a food item on it

·         Ask the students to come up, one by one, and decide whether their food is a healthy or unhealthy by placing it on the chart

·         Once completed we will read the list aloud as a class under the category of healthy foods and then unhealthy foods

·         Students will then be tasked with completing a worksheet classifying healthy and unhealthy foods individually at their desk

·         The teacher will explain how to complete the worksheet

·         The special helper will hand out the worksheets

·         The teacher will hide the chart they completed as a class to determine if students can identify healthy/unhealthy foods

·         The teacher will walk around and assist any student that needs help or is struggling

·         When students are finished the teacher will check to ensure the food items are in the correct column and coloured the food items the correct colour

5. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lesson #5

 (1 lesson)

 

Stories and other texts can be shared through pictures and words Students will be able to

·         Act out a familiar story

·         Place events of a story in order

 

Hook: (10 minutes) – resource help would be preferred

Each student will be given a prop of The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, as the teacher reads the book the students act out their parts.

 

Learning Engagements: (40 minutes)

·         After the book is read, the teacher asks the students the order of the story

·         The teacher draws it with pictures on chart paper

·         The teacher will then model the worksheet which involves placing the story in order

·         The special helper and a friend will hand each student a picture worksheet and a blank piece of paper

·         The teacher will walk around and assist any student that needs help or is struggling

·         When students are finished cutting and placing in order the items of the story, they must show the teacher BEFORE they can glue them down

·         Once all the pieces are glued down in the correct order the students are free to colour them and decorate the page

Pre-Class Preparation

The teacher will need to make the following preparations prior to the class(es)

·         Cut out tissue paper circles for caterpillar body, 6 circles per student

·         Find Insect Body Parts Cards (names written in words), from insect unit

·         Blank Paper, one for each student

·         Get pastels out

Rationale to Lesson: This lesson will be taught as an introduction to the unit of caterpillars. The picture book will be a hook for students and get them interested in thinking about caterpillars. What is a caterpillar? What are the names of the body parts of caterpillars? Where are these body parts located?

Students will need to pay close attention to the book to be able to identify: how many items, what item, and which day the caterpillar consumed each food.

Rationale to Lesson: This lesson will allow students to act out a familiar story as a whole class, promoting teamwork. It will also make students think about the order of events in story. This will help promote students memory and logical thinking skills.
