The first day of my Community Field Experience (CFE) we had a meeting at the head office so I got to drive, 45 minutes, to Williams Lake to see the city! During the meeting we were welcomed to the district and got the chance to meet the staff at the office. After, I toured around town for a few hours, got groceries and headed back to the house.
The house I am staying in is a beautiful log cabin on a lake. They have a gorgeous property with lots of animals: 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 kitten, and 12 pigs. The neighbour’s dogs are also always at the house which is a wonderful way to be greeted when you arrive home from school.
I was nervous for my first day at school. I did not know what to expect from a community school. The school I completed my practicum in had 650 students and this school has 23 students total. I was interested to see how you teach numerous grades in one room. When I arrived I was introduced to all the students and then as a school we did art together. I worked with 2 kindergarten students on their mural that is outside the school. It is amazing to see how all the grades, K-7, work so well together. They are all so polite and kind to one another.
Throughout the week I got to teach in both the primary and intermediate classrooms. I taught daily physical activity (whole school), robots (whole school), show and tell (primary), math (intermediate and primary), LA (primary and intermediate), and art (primary). I love how they do stations for a lot of their subjects where students can work in small groups and get more individualized attention from the teacher. This is something I have not witnessed before and is a technique I want to use in my own classroom.
I am excited to see what happens next week!
