This target aims to reduce FortisBC’s customers’ GHG emissions by 30% by 2030. The 30BY30 is considered an ambitious target. Therefore, FortisBC has been accelerating its innovation activities to work with its customers and suppliers to achieve this target. The capstone project, Emissions Reduction Roadmap and Technology Evaluation, uses the provincial GHG inventory data to analyze the heavy GHG emitter sectors in the last 20 years and identifies a few emerging technologies within the selected sectors that could drive down the GHG emissions.

The project helps to identify seven technically and financially feasible emerging technologies that have the high potential to be applied in BC with a focus on three sectors: Building: dual fuel heat pump, prefabricated façade, and demand control kitchen ventilation; Light manufacturing: waste heat boiler, plate heat exchanger, and natural gas combined heat and power; Heavy industry: dual fuel mining vehicle.

Based on the detailed assessment of energy efficiency potential, utility system potential, non-energy impacts, and technology status, a roadmap for the identified technologies is recommended to the FortisBC team to support the company’s effort in reaching the target 30BY30.

Hana Nguyen | MEL Candidate | Dec 16, 2022 Mentors: Mehmud Iqbal, Mila Barbour, Jim Kobialko,Fortis BC Abstract To support the British Columbia Government in combating climate change and reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions, FortisBC, a Canadian-owned utility company, has developed the target 30BY30.
