When I was reading about business ethics, somehow it reminded me of this article regarding EA’s 2008 scandal regarding its game Spore.
The whole scandal of Spore arised from its newly included SecuROM program. This program allows limited number of game installation. The problem underlying the program is that consumers are not warned of such program and, after installation, the program is impossible to remove.
I think this case is a very good example of ethical conflict in business. From EA’s perspective, it is doing the right thing to protect the copyright of their product-especially when there are so many people who are talented in cracking games. Just like any other business, EA needs to make profit to survive, so it is quite reasonable for EA to try to prevent others from stealling its product. However I think EA has taken an unethical appraoch to this issue, what it did violates consumers’ right. Firstly, EA did not inform its customers of such program; secondly, consumers have no right to control over this program even though they “bought” it- consumers are forced to accept the program.
In conclusion, I would say that EA should change its appraoch, or else it may face more scandal in future.
