Activity 2: What do you think?

Jig-saw activity: working in groups of four, each group member will become an “expert” on one of the following scenarios. First, you are going to work on your chosen scenario with all the other “experts” from other groups. Second, you are going to return to your home group and explain your case to the other group members. Make sure you post your comments and discussion following the appropriate links after each scenario.

Scenario # 1:

You are invited to a big party on the weekend. After a fabulous night with your friends you head home and check your Facebook site before going to bed. You notice that one of your friends took pictures of you at the party and has already posted them on their page.  You find some of the pictures posted of you kind of embarrassing and to make things worse, your friend has tagged you!

Discussion questions:

  1. Does taking pictures or videos of other people require their consent?
  2. Is consent required if you decide to post your pictures or video of other people online?

Scenario # 2:

You are involved in an online chat, and one of the other participants starts to insult you personally since they do not agree with what you are saying.

Discussion questions:

  1. How would you handle the above scenario if it happened in-person in a public place?
  2. Are they different rules of behavior that apply depending on whether you are online or in-person?

Scenario # 3:

One of your classmates starts taking pictures of you without you knowing. He/she creates a fake social media page and starts posting your pictures and comments pretending to be you. Your personal information is there: your birthday, your school, your friends, your contacts, etc. Some of your friends start making comments about that fake page thinking that it belongs to you. They don’t like what is posted there and start excluding you from their circles.

Discussion questions:

  1. How would your break the freeze-out cycle?
  2. Would it be possible for you to get a clean slate? What would it take to get it?
