Unlike Kinkaku-ji and Ryōan-ji Fushimi Inari-Taisha represents Japan's older religion, Shintoism. Shinto shrines are denoted by their red torii gates found at the entrance. The kami Inari is the spirit/deity of agriculture, fertility and industry and is said to take the form of a fox, representation of which can be found throughout the shrine complex. Fushimi Inari-taisha is the head shrine for Inari. What makes Fushimi Inari-taisha different from many Shinto shrines is the sheer number of torii gates, hundreds of the gates cover the path that winds its way up the side of the valley.
