SMART Goals

Goal #1:

Starting in September I plan to introduce process journaling for projects, quizzes and tests with my Social Studies 10 students. The intent of introducing the journaling process is to have my students lay out their specific strategies, processes, successes and stumbling blocks as they work on the projects or prepare for assessments and be reflective of what has worked and what hasn’t so that they are able to try a different strategy for the next assignment or assessment. This will not bring making into the classroom, but it should develop at least part of the maker mindset with my students. The effect will be measured through a series of feedback surveys after projects, tests, and at the end of the course.

Goal #2:

After the second week of school, after the craziness of start up and class changes, I will meet with my school’s Aboriginal Support Teacher and administration to discuss changing how the school conducts Aboriginal Land Acknowledgements. I would like to bring the style of Land Acknowledgement that Dr. Mark Edwards conducted with us to school assemblies and ceremonies. I will need to work with the Aboriginal Support Teacher as the local nations, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̕ilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), have indicated that they have been flooded with requests since the announcement of the new Aboriginal Graduation requirement and wish to work only with specific contacts, I would like their approval for us to share one or more of their legends to situate the school and occupants on the land.

Goal #3:

In my role as Teacher-Librarian I want to apply Culturally Responsive Pedagogy to enhance the inclusivity and accessibility of the Library Learning Common and our collection. Over the last few years, we have been increasing our collection of Black and Indigenous authors and content, my goal is to bring in more books by authors from and about other non-dominant cultures. In conjunction with this I want to create more displays highlighting these cultures and the offerings within our collection. We have started to decorate for and recognize holidays and celebrations beyond those of the traditional Anglo-Saxon Christian dominant culture. I want to work with our ELL teacher to encourage our ELL students to help create awareness for their cultural holidays and celebrations in the Library Learning Commons, one of the more communal spaces in the school. I will also reach out to the Pride Club to see how we can make the space more welcoming to the LGTBQIA2S+ community in the school.
