I was asked help out with the digital citizenship initiative\u00a0with RVS. During my initial\u00a0meeting with \u201cV.R.\u201d (Technology Learning Specialist..not\u00a0<em>virtual reality<\/em>), we tried to distinguish\u00a0the difference\u00a0between digital literacy and digital\u00a0citizenship, as these terms are often used simultaneously. We were perplexed\u00a0that we could not give a definitive definition\u00a0for either or, so we decided that would be a great place to start.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-500 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mgrant\/files\/2018\/02\/b79b92c0aedc662f58443646b434cd7a.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mgrant\/files\/2018\/02\/b79b92c0aedc662f58443646b434cd7a.jpg 728w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mgrant\/files\/2018\/02\/b79b92c0aedc662f58443646b434cd7a-300x225.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"546\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Digital Literacy\u00a0is the process in which we teach our students to use digital tools<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Teach students to evaluate and question their sources. \u00a0<\/strong>Students need to know the difference between a trustworthy and untrustworthy source.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is their source an academic website or a marketing company?<\/li>\n<li>When was the source last updated?<\/li>\n<li>How many other sites link to this source as a reference?<\/li>\n<li>Is the information presented in objective or biased language?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Teach students how to draw a strong conclusion.<\/strong>\u00a0Sure, students might find the right answer to a problem, but what use is that search if they\u2019ve only memorized the logic to get them there? It\u2019s up to teachers to teach that logic and to contextualize the answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Push students to new levels of creativity.<\/strong>\u00a0Once students have a deeper understanding of the answers they\u2019ve found, push for creative application of that knowledge. This could be anything from challenging students to pose related questions to having students use other digital platforms to create something new. Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Film a science experiment based on the answer they\u2019ve found.<\/li>\n<li>Record a history podcast that tells the story of how their answer came to be.<\/li>\n<li>Write an investigative journalism piece on that same topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"referenceString selectable\"><i>7 Reasons Why Digital Literacy is Important for Teachers<\/i>. I recently had a video conference (via Zoom) to discuss\u00a0the direction of my project and ways he can support me.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some follow-up\u00a0tasks or questions to explore:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are the end goal (exit strategies) for students at RVS? What are our their end goals?<\/li>\n<li>Since Digital Citizenship\u00a0is not possible without Digital\u00a0Literacy, what would Dr.\u00a0Ribble\u2019s nine elements of digital citizenship\u00a0look like under the umbrella of Digital Literacy?
