Distract-Ad

When was the last time you watched a video on YouTube or browsed Facebook without stumbling over an advertisement? Even with Adblock and other extensions, social media platforms continue to sneak into our lives. The newest edition to the list is Twitter Moments.

Twitter recently released an update that included a news feed like list, called Moments, that highlights the days most popular content. These moments are curated and include anything from videos, pictures, and plain text tweets. Moments is essentially an addition to the trending feature already on Twitter as it summarizes the hottest topics of the day. Similar to Facebook’s trending feed, Moments allows users to browse broad topics and follow real time events. Twitter is already the go to site for breaking news and finally offers a way to review what happened on that day.

It’ll Really Ad Up

Moments is a bit of a double edged sword. On one side, users get a new way to browse popular news and content without having to follow anyone or anything. On the other side, users are also more vulnerable to advertisers as it provides another outlet for promoted content. But, we may not need to worry since these ads cost a pretty penny. Promoted Moments, or ProMo’s as they are being referred to, cost in the range of $200,000/day. To obtain a ProMo, interested businesses must bid for them based on keywords.

At such a hefty cost I am not sure how well these ads will actually do compared to $200,000 worth of traditional digital ads. Surely the ProMo is guaranteed to be featured to every user, but I’m unsure of the potential reach for this cost. Overall, this seems ike a bit of an awareness campaign tactic since there doesn’t appear to be a targeting feature as of yet.  Maybe overtime the depth and complexity of these ads may change.

Twitter isn’t the only place you’ll be seeing moments though. Check out this new TV commercial promoting the new Moment’s update.
