You ask around and you realize that these symptoms and behaviors are not part of your child\u2019s condition. You may do research or listen to the professionals already working with your child and \u00a0learn that many children with your children\u2019s condition end up getting a secondary diagnosis sometime during the middle childhood years.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A child with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-3-children-with-established-risk-conditions-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\">autism<\/a> may get a secondary diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-9-children-with-mental-ilness-obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\/\" target=\"_blank\">obsessive compulsive disorder<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A child with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-0-children-with-genetic-disorders-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Down syndrome<\/a> may get a secondary diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-3-children-with-established-risk-conditions-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\">autism<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A child with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-1-children-with-nervous-system-disorders-epilepsy\/\" target=\"_blank\">epilepsy<\/a> may get a secondary diagnosis of an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-0-children-with-genetic-disorders-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">intellectual disability<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A child with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-1-children-with-nervous-system-disorders-cerebral-palsy\/\" target=\"_blank\">cerebral palsy<\/a> may get a secondary diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-5-children-with-sensory-impairments-hearing-impairments\/\" target=\"_blank\">hearing loss<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A child with any special need may get a diagnosis of a medical condition, such as celiac disease (see full <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/files\/2012\/12\/MCI_Glossary.pdf\">Glossary<\/a>) or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-1-children-with-nervous-system-disorders-epilepsy\/   \" target=\"_blank\">epilepsy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may not know what to do or where to go. You may not have been prepared to go through another phase of referrals, assessments and diagnoses. \u00a0You may also worry that professionals in both the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-medical-field-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">medical<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-1-the-professionals-from-the-allied-fields\/\" target=\"_blank\">allied fields<\/a> may not believe you, just like some of them may not have believed you when you were going through the assessment and diagnosis processes the first time around when your child was under six years of age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think something else is happening with my child: am i going to have to go through the same process again?
