My name is Mike Warner and I am in my fourth year here at UBC in the Faculty of Science studying Geology. Before I came here I went to the College of New Caledonia in Prince George where I studied Natural Resources and Environmental Technology. I switched over to Geology here when I took and introductory level earth science course, I enjoyed it so much that I came here to UBC to continue my studies. I am enrolled in the final field school this summer and will be done with schooling for the near future and entering the workforce full time. I hope to break in to the Mineral Exploration and Mining Sectors, specifically in exploration planning. My “passion” for exploration planning was discovered last year when I was given a mineral exploration project in class and as a company 3 other students and I had to prepare a presentation for investors on a mineral deposit that we had to explore for. My part was creating an exploration plan, budgeting for this plan, and figuring out all the logistics to get crews in to the mountainous regions that we had set out to map and survey. This project really ignited my passion for Geology and hope that I can bring that to the mining industry. During the summers I work for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations as an Initial Attack Crew Leader which is a great job and I hope that the skills I have learned through it will be able to transfer over into mining. I am also interested in first aid and taking higher level courses as a first aid attendant. I am excited to see what happens in the future and how I can use what I learn in this course to applying for jobs and as a worker too. As for future schooling I would like to do a master’s degree but I want to obtain more knowledge of the industry I’m getting into first and focus my interests more that way.
