I can’t believe that the time has finally come! I remember hearing about the 10 week practicum and feeling totally overwhelmed and excited by the fact that I’ll be in the schools for TEN WHOLE WEEKS… and that was back in September.
Now, it’s April and IT’S HERE!!!!!!!!!! I’m so excited and nervous at the same time!
I feel like I’ve been saying this to everyone but I’m so excited because this has been a dream since forever — and at the same time nervous because I want to do so well.
My first week, I think, has been a bit rocky (or rockier than the past)
I taught Math for the majority of the week, and did MindUp (and a little bit more Math on Friday).
For Math, I was teaching them measurement (height, length, width). Going into the lesson, I thought that this would be something really easy for them to understand and do. I was even a bit nervous that they would think that it was TOO easy! But I was wrong. Measurement seemed to be a little more difficult than I anticipated. I felt like they only truly understood what measurement was after each group went through the “Teacher lesson” with me. Which explains why some of them had difficulty answering the other worksheets. I’m glad that the students were having fun with measurements though. It seemed as if they were all fairly engaged and happy as they tried to figure out how to do the activities.
For next week, I’m doing more measurement (YAY), but this time with perimeter. I have already explained what perimeter is very briefly on Friday. So I’m hoping that they would need less of an explanation on Monday when we do ROUND 2 of Measurement!
Like mentioned previously, I am also starting up on MindUp! I did the first of the fifteen lessons on Friday and I thought that it went well. The kids all seemed very happy and engaged throughout the activity. There were a few “giggles”happening when I tried doing breathing exercises with them.. but I think that these things get better over time and I’m sure that if we continue doing MindUp!, It’ll be less awkward and more relaxing and calming for these students. I’m doing two more MindUp lessons on Wednesday and Friday with the students, so I’m pretty excited about that!
Also, I’m really excited about my Kindergarten table activities I have planned for the Ks this coming week. The theme of the week is nursery rhymes/dinosaurs — and I think that the activities I have planned out for them are super fun so I can’t wait for them to explore them 🙂
Honestly, the first week has gotten my confidence in teaching Math a bit shaken up — so I’m hoping that this coming week’s lessons will flow much more smoothly! 🙂 (Going to take in all the suggestions/comments/feedback/ etc I’ve received from everyone and hopefully my lessons will be so much better!!!)
It is amazing how fast the practicum time goes and how much is learned!! It is great that you are continuing with measurement. The students have not had a lot of experience in this area so, as you say, the simpler and more defined the concepts taught, the easier it will be for them, Continuued practice with teaching math will help you to regain your confidence!! Doing nursery rhymes and dinosaurs is exciting, lots of fun, and full of opportunities for learning in all subject areas.
