Today we read “Gentlemen, Your Verdict” and worked on some questions to prepare for the debate next class. Please complete questions and have them ready to hand in next class.
- In what way was Oram’s selection of the men to survive both humane and practical? Make sure you know the meaning of the terms “humane” and “practical”.
- Why do you think Oram sacrificed his own life?
- What is the moral dilemma the Captain faces? Do the submariners face any moral dilemmas?
- What is a sense of duty? Does Oram have a strong sense of duty? Do the submariners recognize their sense of duty?
- Do you think Oram is guilty? Write down both sides of the argument. Have three points for each side.
