  1. In what way was Oram’s selection of the men to survive both humane and practical? Make sure you know the meaning of the terms “humane” and “practical”.
  2. Why do you think Oram sacrificed his own life?
  3. What is the moral dilemma the Captain faces? Do the submariners face any moral dilemmas?
  4. What is a sense of duty? Does Oram have a strong sense of duty? Do the submariners recognize their sense of duty?
  5. Do you think Oram is guilty? Write down both sides of the argument. Have three points for each side.
