Today we went over the vocabulary for “The Scarlet Ibis” and looked at some point, example, explanations for our paragraph. You will get time to write your rough copies next class.

As mentioned in class, vocab and spelling quiz will be next Monday and good copy of the paragraph will be due next Wednesday.

Today we read “Gentlemen, Your Verdict” together and had time to work on the five questions. Please complete the questions for homework.

  1. In what way was Oram’s selection of the men to survive both humane and practical? Make sure you know the meaning of the terms “humane” and “practical”.
  2. Why do you think Oram sacrificed his own life?
  3. What is the moral dilemma the Captain faces? Do the submariners face any moral dilemmas?
  4. What is a sense of duty? Does Oram have a strong sense of duty? Do the submariners recognize their sense of duty?
  5. Do you think Oram is guilty? Write down both sides of the argument. 3 points for each side.
