To:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Erika Paterson, Professor Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n Having an in-class response system is a very valuable tool to have at UBC, especially in classroom settings which have upwards of 200 students. \u00a0A wireless in-class response system such as an iClicker is a great management tool.\u00a0 It gives both professors and students an idea of current comprehension levels and helps to monitor classroom attendance.\u00a0 Students are shown to be more engaged in classes where they are utilized and they are even positively correlated with stronger grades.<\/p>\n Statement of Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n Current iClickers sell for $44.95 new and $32.40 used at the UBC bookstore. As tuition continues to escalate, disposable income levels drop and anyway students are able to save money would be opportune. Aside from the cost, problems also arise when students forget their device or worse, loose them forcing them to purchase new ones. Students then miss out on participation marks or in-class quizzes, issues affecting their final grade.<\/p>\n Proposed Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n One proposed solution for these issues is to integrate the iClicker software onto multiple electronic devices such as a smartphone or laptop computer.\u00a0 Students would be able to download the application and pair their app device to the compiling system similar to the current process.\u00a0 Having no need for another physical device they would be able to realize considerable cost savings. If a student did manage to loose their smartphone they would always be able to download the program again.\u00a0 The greatest part of this solution is the technology is already available, it just isn\u2019t being used.<\/p>\n Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n To assess the feasibility of integrating an iClicker app:<\/p>\n Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n Primary sources include both UBC professors who do and don\u2019t integrate iClickers into their teaching curriculum. I also seek to communicate with the iClicker maker, Reef Polling, to determine what schools are using the app version currently.\u00a0 I am hoping to talk to representatives of these universities to determine costs and any information they may have on the product.\u00a0 I would like to communicate with the UBC Information Technology department to determine the feasibility of incorporating the software.\u00a0 I also hope to conduct a survey determining if students would be interested in getting an iClicker app.<\/p>\n Secondary sources will include publications on the uses of iClickers and any information pertaining to the use of the app.<\/p>\n My Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n I have been utilizing iClickers since first year undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. \u00a0\u00a0Therefore, I have much experience with them. I am currently studying Computer Science and Commerce at UBC and am looking for ways to create an impact while utilizing the knowledge I gained through the program. Why not help them with the simple implementation of an iClicker app?
