Group Education Session Assignment
What?
For our Group Education Assignment, Katie, Shadi, Shara, Una, Emily and I presented on the topic of FODMAPs. We chose this topic because all of us had heard of the concept in passing but did not know in full detail what it actually entails. Knowing that issues with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are arising, we figured presenting information on what it is and how it can be incorporated into our counselling practice may prove to be beneficial.

So What?
FODMAPs is often mistaken for being a long-term lifestyle diet, but is actually used as a tool to determine certain trigger foods. This piece of information was something I had known prior to this assignment that I think is very important. Therefore, during this elimination phase, a dietitian’s role is vital in ensuring the client meets their nutritional requirements and maintain variety in their diet.
Indeed, our classmates seemed to receive the topic well, asking thought-provoking questions and inquiring about details on certain aspects. I feel more comfortable with the definition, the usage and resource locations now than I had before the assignment.

Now What?
This topic evoked great interest from our classmates. I will continue with self-studying on this topic since I know it has elicited interest from the general public as well. I’m interested to see its effect on people with Celiac disease, since our workshop covered IBS only. I look forward to incorporating the FODMAPs tool into my practice in the future.
