Posted by in Experiences

Below is my self evaluation after completing FNH 480. This course built upon various aspects we’ve learned in FNH 380 and 381 with direct linkages to our future in internship. There is still much to be learned throughout internship, and I look forward to monitoring and evaluating my progress as I move forward. FNH 480 Self Evaluation (2018)

IPE Reflections – i-ethics 3

Posted by in Experiences

What? On October 6th, we had the opportunity to convene with students from various interdisciplinary fields to work on a case activity related to assisted suicide. This was the third i-ethics session we have had since entering into dietetics and proved to be an interesting one with a somewhat emotional topic. — So What? I learned about what it means to make difficult decisions as a team and to listen to the expertise of each healthcare team member and ultimately support one another. I also learned about listening to the…read more

Advanced Counselling Session

Posted by in Experiences

What? As a part of our year 4 curriculum, we had the opportunity to assess and counsel a client in the same session. This was done over Skype. My client had two main nutrition-related issues: 1. Constipation (from medications due to Charcot Marie Tooth) 2. Plant-based protein sources for a vegetarian/vegan diet Many other health concerns arose during our session and we worked together to sort through what was relevant and what I, as a student, felt comfortable and capable addressing. —– So What? This was a step forward from…read more

RD Job Shadowing 2018 – Reproductive Mental Health

Posted by in Experiences

What? On February 2nd, May and I visited the Reproductive Mental Health Clinic to shadow Anita Gillespie. It was a quiet Friday morning and we were lucky to have a tour of not only her clinic but nearby clinics such as the Perinatal Clinic, Eating Disorders Clinic (inpatient and outpatient), and other sections of Women’s Hospital. We also sat in and shadowed her counselling session with a client. —– So What? This was a wonderful opportunity to shadow a dietitian in an outpatient-style clinic. In FNH 380 I shadowed a…read more

Group Education Session Assignment

Posted by in Experiences

What? For our Group Education Assignment, Katie, Shadi, Shara, Una, Emily and I presented on the topic of FODMAPs. We chose this topic because all of us had heard of the concept in passing but did not know in full detail what it actually entails. Knowing that issues with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are arising, we figured presenting information on what it is and how it can be incorporated into our counselling practice may prove to be beneficial. — So What? FODMAPs is often mistaken for being a long-term lifestyle…read more

Client Assessment and Counselling Assignment

Posted by in Experiences

What? One of my SMART goals, like many of my classmates, was to improve upon my counselling skills. This assignment allowed me to build on this goal with real life immersion into patient/client-counselling with a volunteer client. This included an initial “assessment” session and a second “advising” session. I took an initial assessment of my client regarding her nutrition issues with an assessment form I formulated based on this topic. After this session, I further researched her nutrition-related — So What? Having the opportunity to counsel a real life client…read more

RD Job Shadowing Assignment

Posted by in Experiences

What? I had the opportunity to attend Lion’s Gate Hospital to shadow dietitian, Tiffany Yeh, on the surgical ward. This was an intriguing option for me as I have had limited experience at an inpatient setting. Furthermore, I had never been to Lion’s Gate Hospital and had heard about their new iPad usage for taking meal orders from patients. —– So What? As students, having the chance to shadow a dietitian gives us an opportunity to observe the day-to-day tasks that heir position entails. It gives us a look into…read more
