Consumer-Focused Writing Assignment

Posted by in Experiences

What? As a part of our FNH 381 May course, my partner, Alexa, and I had the opportunity to create a consumer-focused hand out for a dietitian on Vancouver Island through Saanich Community Health Services. This hand out was to be distributed to people who have recently been discharged from the hospital and may be experiencing a loss of weight and strength. Our hand-out contains sources of energy and nutrient-dense foods, recommendations and tips for including them into each meal of the day, an an ‘FAQ’ section answering common questions that may arise….read more

Reflective Self Evaluation Assignment

Posted by in Experiences

In light of FNH 380 coming to a close, we had the opportunity to complete a reflective self evaluation assignment to assess our learning highlights and construct future goals and strategies to improve on given learning outcomes. This, similar to the Self-Assessment and Learning Plan, provided me with a chance to detect gaps in my learning thus far. With that said, I can acknowledge that I am still early in my degree and will gain more exposure in the listed fields as time progresses. Take a look at my Evaluation…read more

Negotiation and Conflict Management Tutorial

Posted by in Experiences

What? My group, consisting of Beth Nanson, May Hasegawa, Emma Clark and myself presented on the topic of Negotiation and Conflict Management. Admittedly, this topic was initially among the bottom three of our desired list and having been the last group chosen in the lottery, we were not particularly thrilled on the subject. Slowly, however, as we discussed the different components, activities and media options to include, we became more engaged in our topic and had a fantastic experience with our tutorial presentation. We had several meetings prior to our tutorial to…read more

IPE – Foundations of Ethical Practice 2016

Posted by in Experiences

What? I attended another interdisciplinary student focus group session, similar to Health Connect, this time focusing on Foundations of Ethical Practice. In my auditorium, I was one of 5 dietetic students representing our program and profession alongside medical, dental, nursing and midwifery students. Prior to this session, we were to complete an online module and fill out an Interprofessional Ethics Grid based on our respective profession’s Code of Ethics. During the session, we referred back to this as well as our own profession’s Code of Ethics to compare the differences….read more

Vancouver General Hospital Site Visit

Posted by in Experiences

What? On September 21st, I visited dietitians Jennifer Yan and Anna Chan at Vancouver General Hospital. Jennifer is the clinical dietitian on the 14th floor in both the sub-acute orthopaedic unit (mostly elderly patients with hip fractures) and in the sub-acute medicine unit (mostly patients admitted with congestive heart failure, kidney disease, pneumonia etc.). Anna is the Food Services Manager in the kitchen, which provides meals for all patients in the hospital. My group began in Jennifer’s office discussing her daily tasks, using the site visit report as a template for discussion….read more

Networking Reflections

Posted by in Experiences

What? In the year prior to my application, I shared a few classes with the now 4th year dietetic students. Out of shyness and a lack of context to communicate, I hardly interacted with these students even though I knew that they could be valuable resources in learning about the UBC dietetics program specifically. Today, through the Networking Reflections Assignment, I met with Holly Heximer at a local coffee shop on campus to discuss to program and her experiences. I had a prepared list of questions that I had brewing since my application and she…read more

IPE – UBC Health Connect 2016

Posted by in Experiences

What? UBC offers various health professional programs, including dietetics. On September 19th, students in various faculties came together to meet and discuss the importance of interprofessional collaboration at Health Connect. My group consisted of seven students: two medical, one nursing, one pharmacy, one dental, one occupational therapy and myself as a dietetic student. My initial fear of the event was that there could be a hint of hostility between students in differing faculties. My worries soon dissipated; It was a delightfully comfortable and friendly environment. We discussed stereotypes within our professions (dietitians do…read more
