Holiday precautions!

WARNING: Graphic Content! This is an ad montage from Australia showing all elements of the TAC Road Safety Campaigns from the last 20 years. This should make anyone think twice about getting in a car after too many drinks….

TAC CAMPAIGN

This is long running campaign montage, to remind us before we head into the holiday season to remember not to get caught up in all of the festivities and forget that we have an obligation to ourselves and each other to not drink and drive.
I hope this not for profit organizations marketing strategy is effective and has an impact on you. I hope that its “position” in your mind stays relevant and important when making decisions and you “retrieve” it when debating even the thought of drinking and driving.

Have a safe and happy holiday everyone!

WINTER TIRES!

As university students most of us have not only had a few winters of driving under our belt and I truly believe that checking out this website will help all of us that think we know what to do when it comes to black ice and sharp turns in the snow. The site has loads of info and video clips on what to do and how to drive in the winter you can even be entered into a draw to win 2,500 bucks.
Michelin bring your this great info!
I work for Honda and sell their tires all the time and they have a mail in rebate going on too as well for buying a set of 4 tires you get $70 bucks back and in general because of how cold your all season tires get they harden up and do not drive as well as winters.

A review of Michelin X-ice Xi2 tires is available here too if you want another

When it rains it POURS!

When it rains it POURS! I recall when first starting at UBC that it becomes quite the swamp anytime it rains! I was even on a forum where a girl posted this “I’m planning to get a pair this year, since i go to UBC and there are millions of puddles on the sidewalks when it rains. It’s just such pain in the but when my sneakers gets wet or the bottom of my pants are drenched.”
For this water logged issue I found 2 essential products to help cope!

1.  Tretorn Rain Boots
“The Kelly is a classic and refined boot for your rainy day needs. 100% waterproof natural rubber. PVC free. Shiny finish. Microfleece lining and footbed. Tonal rubber outsole”
– these are comfortable and warm because of the fleece lining. They are only $80 as opposed to the $160 Hunter boots, and they are not chunky they are sleek and more fashionable than most rain boots out there!

2. Back Pack Cover
– backpack soaked = homework wet = University prof less than impressed!
– textbook wet, a waste of $150 b/c you cannot re-sell = angry student!
Solution the cheap and easy to use backpack cover that fits most bags!
$6-16 depending on size!

Just a couple products that get me through the pain of RAIN!

Nestle…..

As I was reading through the list of my classmates names and blogs I came upon one in particular that reminded me of a topic I had presented in regards to ethics in my comm 299 public speaking class. It was a fellow classmate Amanda’s A-M-A-N-D-A’s BLOG blog:

Her blog discusses the vast line of products nestle has and how they offer different types of products in different countries. What many consumer’s fail to know about nestle is that there is a Boycott of Nestle that has been going strong since July 7, 1977, in regards to their infant formula.

The violations committed by Nestle are described in INFACT Canada: Nestle Boycott
Nestle’s actions disgust me, as Amanda mentioned they have hundreds if not thousands of products that sell well and make money, you can ask any consumer and if they look at the labels of candy, food, frozen dinners they would see how the nestle logo is hard not to find ! I tried not to purchase Nestle products, and it was seemingly impossible at times because there are so many that you wouldn’t even think of.  My point is Nestle you are making money, why exploit those who have little to begin with in third world countries? You can make your money off first world mass consumer’s, why is that not enough? Why do you have to take from those who have next to nothing?
Nestle essentially tricks mothers in developing countries into thinking that they need to be feeding their infants formula right away. They have their employees pose as doctors and trick them. Even though in these countries the water is contaminated and then is mixed with the formula. Breast milk is best for your baby for the first few months of his/her life. It is free for these less fortunate mothers and better than this formula, yet Nestle’s influence causes them to spend a weeks worth of income on this formula because they think it will be better as they are manipulated by Nestle. 3D TV

Recently, after my friend was interested in purchasing a new TV set, I headed down to Future Shop to check our some TV’s. I finally got the chance to check out these 3D tv’s everyone has been talking about. I for one don’t understand that need. I have zero interest in wearing weird glasses that make me feel slightly nauseous, that cost over $100 bucks each. Could you imagine being a parent to more than 2 children and having to make sure that all of you kids had these ridiculous glasses in order to sit down and watch a family movie together?

According to CBC only 2% of total TV sales were 3D and the sales are on a “slow boil” because they are expected to “ramp up” in the next few year. I for one disagree because they are over-priced and too specific, as in you need 3D movies to watch on them and 3D glasses to watch them. I have always disliked anything 3D call me old fashioned, but I can accept the fact that TV is not REAL and I don’t need 3 dimensions to try and persuade me that what I am seeing is more realistic.
I honestly prefer the Sharp Aquos Quattron, this TV adds a new dimension of colour (yellow) to its screen and the images are for lack of a better word “breath-taking” I don’t care or know much about TV specs, but I wanted this television, the vividness of the images and the clarity/colours were unreal, I would rather spend money on that and not need to wear those 3D glasses!

CBC has a an article that discusses this slow, but sure increase of interest:

A new spin on Low Carb

I noticed in the paper the other day that KFC’s Double down sandwich in now in the Canada. An obvious initial US launch…. and now it is here. I remember laughing with a friend as she had never heard of it and couldnt believe that this existed. There is no bun, is it even a sandwich then? Just meat meat and more meat.  Low carb? hah More like  heart attack you can pay for! I was delighted to see wen I noticed a fellow pupil Jess’ blog on the exact topic  I had joked with my friend about earlier this week. I agree with her on ALL counts, how did this get approved for canada? I thought we were better than that!
As Jess mentions it may not be fixed on the menu, they are trying it out I guess.
It launched Nov the 14th!

Check out Jess’ post!

Daily Shockers…

My day started off the same, went to class came home decided to ACTUALLY do some productive studying and be a good student, yet as I login to my computer avoiding distractions at all costs (facebook/youtube etc) my younger brother send me a message that a highschool teacher that we both had when we were attending school in North Vancouver was convicted of sexual assault—

And as I continued to search for more articles it seems as though there was a relationship between himself and the student. None the less this leads me to what I meant to blog about. As I was on ctv.ca I also came across this product ban by Health Canada for the infamous Brazilian Blowout hair treatment.
This is something I heard my hair stylist complain about as well she told me two of her colleagues quit due to nausea and headaches associated with this supposedly natural acai based hair treatment used to leave women with sleek smooth hair using a more natural product than the chemically straightening. The bottle says formaldehyde free on it, yet tests done by Health Canada have found 12 times the safe amount of formaldehyde in the the product.  HOW HOW HOW can an american based company say on their bottle FORMALDEHYDE FREE and have copious amounts of formaldehyde in it? This reminds me that the labels on our products in some sense mean nothing… and I am glad I didn’t end up getting a brazilian blowout this summer!

The Lack of Customer Service at Gold’s Gym

My blog today is about gym memberships and Gold’s Gym in particular.
Their Strategy is to have you sign up for an entire year, even though as students we are only generally in the campus area

either commuting on living out here during the 8months of the school year.
I was told that if I am not able to use my pass in the summer months I could just put it on hold no problem and would have to pay a fee of $10.00 a month. When this time came I was told that the there was a fee to put it on hold as wel as 10.00 a month. Even though I explained to them the person who sold me my pass had never mentioned any fee when putting on hold aside from the $10 a month. They said essentially for lack of better words “too bad he doesnt work here anymore and you have no proof” even though my friend was told the exact same thing. After that whole thing I won a draw at blenz for a free year pass at golds gym but was called and informed they didn’t want to do a full drawing as there were only a few participants and that I am being given a courtesy one week pass. This is false advertising no? I won the draw… they just decided not to give me what was advertised?
And now to add insult to injury when I came back after the summer to take my membership off hold they charged me 3 times in one month as opposed to the regular bi-weekly charges and when I called the girl tried to say oooh thats normal those are the charges as if I would just say okay and put the phone down. I explained to her I was being charged an extra time and that it wasnt even on the regular bi weekly scheduled days. I feel that these payments are automated, so its difficult for me to understand why there was a charge on a random date that wasnt the set date. I feel that golds is trying to take advantage of ppl who don’t keep a keen eye on their visa bills as automated payments go to gold so often that ppl wont notice and they can weasel 22 more dollars out of you. I was insulted at this and the fact that the girl on the phone tried to act as if this was a normal payment.  I eventually had them credit my account but now fear that she was just saying that and nothing will happen. I dont understand what this company is thinking and even though i like the location and working out there, the costs and lack of trust outweigh the benefits for me at this point and I recommend avoiding membership at any costs and will DEFINITELY NOT be renew my membership EVER!

DOVE!

After doing some research on the company that my team chose to do our project on  I really enjoyed the numerous
options and links available on the dove website.
There are even coupons and as a student coupons are never a bad thing! I just never thought to look at a soap company’s webpage!

They are very actively involved with the campaign for real beauty and have some top level ppl blogging as well as forums and article available.

this is the link to a head dermatologists blog and she gives some good skin care tips that you can trust!
