Remember when you could make your own website on platforms like Geocities?

Good times.

The expansive art of web design has grown a lot since those days but, recently, there has been an interesting phenomenon that has taken the internet by storm.

While you might not have heard of it, you have most likely seen Bootstrap in all its glory at least a few times while surfing the internet. Bootstrap is a framework that utilizes infinite scroll as well as optimizes websites for use across different devices.

This framework has been all over the internet and is essentially the golden standard for website usability. Websites from both brand new startups to long-standing companies are using this framework and its hard to find a clean website that doesn’t use this format.

What is most fascinating about this framework is how fast it became the norm. Only a few years ago did this format look unique–now, it seems like it has now become generic where even the PNG icons being used look almost identical.

As a result of this phenomenon, the question is now, who will break the mold of clean design and try something new? On top of that, if there is a solid alternative, will bootstrap become obsolete?

Only the passage of time will answer these questions but one thing is for sure–the CSS/HTML world will have to put in a lot of work to trump this solid specimen of web design.
