New items since previous posts\u00a0appear\u00a0in <em>italics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What has arrived?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sadly, Louis Vuitton, KFC,\u00a0Burberry Kids and Ugg<\/li>\n<li>Mini, Bentley<\/li>\n<li>child seats<\/li>\n<li>sidewalks<\/li>\n<li>parks<\/li>\n<li>farmers\u2019 markets<\/li>\n<li>yoga<\/li>\n<li>dogs on leashes<\/li>\n<li>Sunday morning joggers and bikers<\/li>\n<li>coffee culture<\/li>\n<li>river walkway along the Dund River (under construction in May 2015 but looking very promising)<\/li>\n<li>city park along the Tuul<\/li>\n<li>sports cars<\/li>\n<li><em>organic shopping<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 658px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-version=\"6\">\n<div style=\"padding: 8px;\">\n<div style=\"background: #F8F8F8; line-height: 0; margin-top: 40px; padding: 50.0% 0; text-align: center; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 8px 0 0 0; padding: 0 4px;\"><a style=\"color: #000; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/_HHX3-hJgW\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Organic retail has established itself in #Mongolia<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 8px; overflow: hidden; padding: 8px 0 7px; text-align: center; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;\">A photo posted by Julian Dierkes (@jbdierkes) on <time style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px;\" datetime=\"2015-12-10T12:23:58+00:00\">Dec 10, 2015 at 4:23am PST<\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\" async=\"\" defer=\"defer\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What has disappeared, or at least nearly?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>stationary 80s-office-phone-looking old-granny cell phone booth<\/li>\n<li>for-pay scales (actually, they seem to be hanging on)<\/li>\n<li>free WiFi on Sukhbaatar, er Chinggis Khaan, er, Sukhbaatar Square<\/li>\n<li>Sukhbaatar Square, er, Chinggis Khaan Square<\/li>\n<li>open gullys\/missing manholes<\/li>\n<li>street kids<\/li>\n<li>packs of dogs<\/li>\n<li>smoking<\/li>\n<li>the sixth-floor souvenir shop at the State Department Store (though perhaps seasonal)<\/li>\n<li>oversized sunglasses for women that were so popular across Asia (?) some years ago<\/li>\n<li>Nescaf\u00e9 (see above on coffee culture)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What will appear in the future<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>navigation systems<\/li>\n<li>wheelchair accessibility<\/li>\n<li>bike lanes<\/li>\n<li>new airport (apparently)<\/li>\n<li>subway (really, I wish they had selected light rail instead)<\/li>\n<li>Harley-Davidson<\/li>\n<li>urban renewal and historical restorations embracing district north of government house (National University of Mongolia, German embassy, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>road signs in the countryside (and not just the very random, very occasional ones that can be found now)<\/li>\n<li>street names and signs in the city<\/li>\n<li>network of cross-country riding trails (though not in central Ulaanbaatar)<\/li>\n<li>parking (meters)<\/li>\n<li>Combined Heat and Power Plant #5 (yeah, right!)<\/li>\n<li>hipsters discovering\u00a0\u0423\u0410\u0417 (minivan and jeep)<\/li>\n<li><em>Canada Goose<\/em>, <em>Arc&#8217;teryx.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What will disappear in the near future<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m going out on a predictive limb here\u2026 2-3 years is what I mean by \u201cnear future\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stray dogs<\/li>\n<li>stretched-out hand to signal for a car ride<\/li>\n<li>that awkward extra half-step on most stairs<\/li>\n<li><em>whitening make-up<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What will disappear in the medium-term future<\/h3>\n<p>I mean around 7 years or so.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>new (to Mongolia) cars that are right-hand drive<\/li>\n<li>the neo-classical Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, with its Stalinist (if that\u2019s an architectural style) spire<\/li>\n<li>deels in the city<\/li>\n<li>some of the downtown university campuses<\/li>\n<li>buildings of 4 floors or less in the urban core<\/li>\n<li>Russian minivans (\u0423\u0410\u0417452) but see above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been keeping a list of things that are arriving to\/disappearing from central Ulaanbaatar: May 2015 |\u00a0May 2014 |\u00a0October 2013.
