{"id":520,"date":"2011-12-15T16:23:01","date_gmt":"2011-12-16T00:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mongolia\/?p=520"},"modified":"2018-12-29T12:34:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-29T20:34:03","slug":"clarification-on-electoral-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mongolia\/2011\/clarification-on-electoral-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarification on Electoral Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Julian Dierkes<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, in my haste to share information quickly, I got some aspects of the revisions to the electoral law wrong <a title=\"New Electoral Law Passed by Ikh Khural\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mongolia\/2011\/new-electoral-law-passed-by-ikh-khural\/\">this morning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[Thanks again to <a title=\"About Byambajav Dalaibuyan\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mongolia\/about-mongolia-today\/about-byambajav-dalaibuyan\/\">Byamba<\/a> who brought these clarifications to my attention.]<\/p>\n<p>An unofficial version of the electoral law has been reproduced on Mongolian news sites, e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.news.mn\/content\/90554.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news.mn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1. 48 members will be elected from single-member districts. I had thought this morning that the 48 members who would be elected directly would be elected in multi-member ridings as they had been in 2008. So voters will have two votes: a single individual candidate (in their riding) and a party or coalition.<\/p>\n<p>While this means that Mongolia is out of the race for most complicated electoral system, this is obviously very good news and makes the revisions sound quite sensible.<\/p>\n<p>2. Mongolians living abroad will be able to vote through Mongolian embassies 15 days before the election.<\/p>\n<p>3.
