New items since previous posts appear in italics.<\/p>\n<h2>What has arrived?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>sadly: Louis Vuitton, KFC, Burberry Kids, Ugg and a\u00a0Porsche dealership<\/li>\n<li>Mini, Bentley<\/li>\n<li>child seats<\/li>\n<li>sidewalks<\/li>\n<li>parks<\/li>\n<li>farmers\u2019 markets<\/li>\n<li>yoga<\/li>\n<li>dogs on leashes<\/li>\n<li>Sunday morning joggers and bikers<\/li>\n<li>burgeoning coffee culture<\/li>\n<li>river walkway along the Dund River (under construction in May 2015 but looking very promising)<\/li>\n<li>city park along the Tuul<\/li>\n<li>sports cars<\/li>\n<li>organic shopping<\/li>\n<li>gated communities (virtually all the new developments towards and in Zaisan)<\/li>\n<li>wheelchair accessibility (moved from \u201cWhat Will Appear\u201d category as ministries are now (meant to be) wheelchair-accessible<\/li>\n<li>the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BC%D1%87%D3%A9%D0%BB%D3%A9%D3%A9%D0%BB&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#\u0437\u0430\u043c\u0447\u04e9\u043b\u04e9\u04e9\u043b<\/a>\u201d hastag, a city campaign to shame property owners about their infringement of public space. Seems \u2013 quietly \u2013 very successful when you look at many photos posted.<\/li>\n<li>large-scale BBQ extravaganza on the banks of the Tuul river, particularly near the ASEM Road. On summer weekends, so many cars parked right on the riverside, BBQs planted right next to them, families camping out, some literally<\/li>\n<li>Harley-Davidson (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mongolia\/2017\/khurelsukh-mpp-biography\/\">now seemingly endorsed by new PM U Khurelsukh<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>drive-home service for drivers who have been drinking. You call the service, they drop off a driver who drives you home in your car and is then picked up again. Given \u2013 fortunately \u2013 much stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws, a great service!<\/li>\n<li>bike lanes and\u00a0bike parking,\u00a0<em>being shooed off bike lanes by riders<\/em><\/li>\n<li>street names and signs in the city<\/li>\n<li>fat tire bikes<\/li>\n<li>home air filtration systems that everyone is talking about<\/li>\n<li><em>Hummer stretch limousine<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>airport road is getting ever fancier, now there&#8217;s a giant overpass under construction just before crossing the Tuul on the way into town. I drove by there in summer 2017. Oh my, it far from the city!<\/li>\n<li>subway (really, I wish they had selected light rail instead)<\/li>\n<li>urban renewal and historical restorations embracing district north of government house (National University of Mongolia, German embassy, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>road signs in the countryside (and not just the very random, very occasional ones that can be found now)<\/li>\n<li>network of cross-country riding trails (though not in central Ulaanbaatar)<\/li>\n<li>parking (meters)<\/li>\n<li>Combined Heat and Power Plant #5 (yeah, right!)<\/li>\n<li>hipsters discovering \u0423\u0410\u0417 (minivan and jeep)<\/li>\n<li>Canada Goose, Arc\u2019teryx<\/li>\n<li>giant whole blown into Bogd Khaan mountain to \u201cdrain\u201d polluted air out of the valley (that actually is a proposal, but it will not appear!)<\/li>\n<li><em>some kind of traffic routing system with overhead displays<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What will disappear in the medium-term future<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m going out on a predictive limb here\u2026 2-3 years is what I mean by \u201cnear future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, since I have been predicting this as &#8220;near future&#8221; change for some years now, I guess I was wrong with all these predictions, and have changed the listing to medium-term future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stray dogs<\/li>\n<li>stretched-out hand to signal for a car ride<\/li>\n<li>that awkward extra half-step on most stairs<\/li>\n<li>whitening make-up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What will disappear in the long-term future<\/h2>\n<p>I mean around 7 years or so. None of these seems to be coming true quite yet, so I&#8217;ve changed the name of this category from medium-term to long-term.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>new (to Mongolia) cars that are right-hand drive<\/li>\n<li>the neo-classical Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, with its Stalinist (if that\u2019s an architectural style) spire [Tough call to make as the MFA building is now dwarfed by its own annex]<\/li>\n<li>deels in the city<\/li>\n<li>some of the downtown university campuses<\/li>\n<li>buildings of 4 floors or less in the urban core<\/li>\n<li>Russian minivans (\u0423\u0410\u0417452) but see above<\/li>\n<li><em>the Winter Palace.
