He is also touting a program called &#8220;\u0428\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430 \u0401\u0441-\u0425\u04e9\u0433\u0436\u043b\u0438\u0439\u043d \u0413\u044d\u0440\u044d\u044d.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These are all terms that are probably recognizable, if not familiar, to anyone who has considered Mongolian political speech.<\/p>\n<p>While both including \u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b \u00e0 la Battulga, these are much longer slogans, and include formal and somewhat traditionally-coloured terms, in contrast to Battulga&#8217;s use of &#8220;winning&#8221; (which probably also referenced Trump).<\/p>\n<p>The first is &#8220;Let&#8217;s strive for Mongolia,&#8221; \u0437\u04af\u0442\u0433\u044d\u0445 being a verb that is often found in socialist as well as contemporary political speech, having the flavour of collective, but directed action (i.e., by the party or enterprise management).<\/p>\n<p>The second is &#8220;Mongolia\/Mongolians are the Owners of Their Wealth.&#8221; Though \u0431\u0430\u044f\u043b\u0430\u0433 refers specifically to mineral resources, it is related to the abstract term for wealth or value, \u0431\u0430\u044f\u043d, used in many formal, ceremonial, and ritual contexts (for example, it is an element of many place names). \u042d\u0437\u044d\u043d is a term for a political-economically effective sovereign that operates across a huge spectrum, and can refer to Chinggis Khaan (often referred to as \u042d\u0437\u044d\u043d \u0427\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0438\u0441; &#8220;empire&#8221; is \u044d\u0437\u044d\u043d \u0433\u04af\u0440\u044d\u043d), the head of a household or herding group (the \u044d\u0437\u044d\u043d of a ger or an ail, including herd animals), and the sovereign entity or force, sometimes represented anthropomorphically or zoomorphically, associated with parts of the landscape, particularly mountains, which must be properly respected by humans also inhabiting and extracting flora, fauna, and minerals from the landscape that &#8220;belong to&#8221; and are replenished by the \u044d\u0437\u044d\u043d. With this slogan, Khurelsukh is no doubt referencing the MPP-led government&#8217;s recent efforts to renegotiate the OT agreement and issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/seeking-to-unseat-australia-mongolias-giant-coal-mine-plans-%24700-mln-bond-2021-04-21\">new TT bonds<\/a>, and also the number of large industrial projects that he has been naming in his program (&#8220;The Agreement for Justice and Development&#8221;), which include oil production, natural gas pipeline(s), and steel production, and which the MPP has been loudly talking about for some time now.<\/p>\n<h2>DP<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/%D0%94%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B3%D1%83%D0%B9%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B3%D2%AF%D0%B9%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#\u0414\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0433\u0443\u0439\u043b\u0430\u043b\u0433\u04af\u0439\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/%D0%90%D1%80%D0%B4%D1%87%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#\u0410\u0440\u0434\u0447\u0438\u043b\u0441\u0430\u043d\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VoteErdene2021?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VoteErdene2021<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gNTqatAqBh\">pic.twitter.com\/gNTqatAqBh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u0410\u0440\u0434\u0447\u0438\u043b\u0441\u0430\u043d \u043d\u0430\u043c \/DP\/ (@DemocraticMN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DemocraticMN\/status\/1397217474744041473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The DP is using <a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-1ny4l3l r-1ddef8g r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/%D0%94%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B3%D1%83%D0%B9%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B3%D2%AF%D0%B9%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BB?src=hashtag_click\">#\u0414\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0433\u0443\u0439\u043b\u0430\u043b\u0433\u04af\u0439\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b<\/a> as its slogan.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, we settled on &#8220;Mongolia without Dictatorship&#8221; as the best translation, though <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnandDairtan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anand<\/a> offered &#8220;Mongolia without Oppression&#8221; as an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Etymologically related to \u0434\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0433\u0443\u0439\u043b\u0430\u043b are \u0434\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0445 (&#8220;to press,&#8221; as in &#8220;a button&#8221;), and \u0434\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043b\u0442 (&#8220;pressure,&#8221; including referring to air pressure and blood pressure). &#8220;Oppression&#8221; makes a lot of sense as a translation of &#8220;\u0434\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0433\u0443\u0439\u043b\u0430\u043b.&#8221; However, &#8220;dictatorship&#8221; also carries across how \u0434\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0433\u0443\u0439\u043b\u0430\u043b is specifically associated with a particular leader, be it Tsedenbal, or, as seems obvious in this case,<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mn\/r\/2429349\/\"> Khurelsukh, and also Battulga<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qUCGUpuaFU\">pic.twitter.com\/qUCGUpuaFU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u0422\u043e\u0433\u043c\u0438\u0434\u044b\u043d \u0414\u041e\u0420\u0416\u0425\u0410\u041d\u0414 (@dorjkhand_t) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dorjkhand_t\/status\/1396792471049363456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 24, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of &#8220;igniting,&#8221; KhUN has used used novel political language in their slogan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/%D0%9D%D0%B8%D0%B9%D0%B3%D1%8D%D0%BC%D0%B4%D1%8D%D1%8D%D0%93%D1%8D%D1%80%D1%8D%D0%BB%D0%90%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%B0%D1%86%D0%B3%D0%B0%D0%B0%D1%8F?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#\u041d\u0438\u0439\u0433\u044d\u043c\u0434\u044d\u044d\u0413\u044d\u0440\u044d\u043b\u0410\u0441\u0430\u0430\u0446\u0433\u0430\u0430\u044f<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rather than the &#8220;state&#8221; or &#8220;nation,&#8221; they invoke &#8220;society,&#8221; and rather than pushing them to &#8220;awake&#8221; (\u0441\u044d\u0440\u0433\u044d\u0445) and carry out a predetermined path, they use the term for &#8220;to kindle, ignite,&#8221; which stimulates associations with creativity and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>KhUN has also riffed off of Battulga&#8217;s slogan with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%A7%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B0?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b\u0427\u0430\u0434\u043d\u0430<\/a>, but without bogging the slogan down with unnecessary syllables or accusatory 1 million tugrug words. \u0427\u0430\u0434\u0430\u0445 is one of the first words that anyone learning the Mongolian language learns and one that forms a fundamental part of any Mongolian language user&#8217;s vocabulary, and means &#8220;to be able to.&#8221; The slogan nicely carries tones of success and achievement, without the dogwhistling implications of there being enemies or losers, as Battulga&#8217;s (and Trump&#8217;s) slogan did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Marissa J.
