I will start off by saying that I was devastated when I found out my practicum placement. This was not because of the school or teacher, but because I was given a schedule with all woods!

I had a preconceived notion that I would be getting more visual arts / media arts classes, however when I initially looked at my schedule I had the rug pulled out from under me and I felt entirely deflated. I decided that I would give my practicum placement a try and decide after if I was going to request a change.

I’m glad a stuck through, the tech department in my sponsor school was extremely supportive especially my School Advisor. I had told him my initial concerns and he was very keen on making sure I got some vama classroom experience.

While on my short practicum I was able to see lots of great project ideas, teaching styles, and make great connections with students and teachers. I was also able to see how to look after the hidden jobs of shop teachers (i.e. getting machines repaired, checking the pressured air system, dealing with classroom constraints and the extra curricular programs).

I am looking forward to heading back to my school for my long practicum to gain even more experience and insight.
