{"id":153,"date":"2009-06-21T22:22:52","date_gmt":"2009-06-22T06:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/morrisonsetec565\/?page_id=153"},"modified":"2009-06-24T10:48:13","modified_gmt":"2009-06-24T18:48:13","slug":"asynchronous-group-discussion-activity","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/morrisonsetec565\/3-communication-tools\/asynchronous-group-discussion-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8211; Asynchronous Group Discussion Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-right: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #993333;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Background<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Module 3 of this course, there are two distinct groups of learners: participants who use <strong>Windows XP <\/strong>and will complete readings and interactivities related to XP; other participants who use <strong>Windows Vista <\/strong>and will complete readings and interactivities related to Vista &#8211; including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading a chapter\u00a0in the custom text, either <em>Getting Started with Windows XP<\/em> or <em>Getting Started with Windows Vista<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Reviewing videos and animated demonstrations<\/li>\n<li>Completing learning activities<\/li>\n<li>Working with interactive media and annotated documents<\/li>\n<li>Attending a synchronous web-conference for a\u00a0module review and Q&amp;A<\/li>\n<li>And participating in the following <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>Asynchronous Group\u00a0Discussion Activity<\/em><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Note\u00a0to Instructor<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0the actual <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Asynchronous Group\u00a0Discussion Activity<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>is located in the Moodle course under the <em>Mod Wrap <\/em>of Module 3 &#8211; in week 3\n<ul>\n<li>This works and I see no huge limitations-to-date, other than for auditory learners or kinesthetic learners who\u00a0would much prefer to\u00a0have a <em>live<\/em> oral discussion &#8211; but they will get some hands-on experience with various interactive learning activities and get a chance to see, hear and speak in some scheduled synchronous communication events\u00a0:&gt;)<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0full description appears below<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Groups will be established once students have responded to the Poll: <em>What Version of Windows\u00a0<\/em>(earlier in the module)<\/li>\n<li>Discussion\u00a0format selected is: <em>Each person posts one discussion topic<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; This discussion type, allows each participants to post exactly one new discussion topic (everyone can reply to them though).<br \/>\n&#8211; It\u00a0is useful when you want individuals to start a discussion, for example, posting his\/her reflection on the week&#8217;s topic, and everyone else to read the individual postings and respond.<\/li>\n<li>Groups will be set up as &#8220;separate&#8221;, meaning group members can see only postings in their group area.\u00a0 However, once the posting period is past, this will be changed to &#8220;visible&#8221; so each group can read all postings made in either group area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Module 3 Discussion Activity <span style=\"font-size: 8.5pt; color: black; line-height: 115%; font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">Description <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Group Discussion Activity &#8211; Chapter Summarizing<\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n<p>1. Those of you who are using <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Windows XP<\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>have read and worked through Chapter 2 in our custom text: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<em>Getting Started with Windows XP&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. Those of you who are using <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Windows Vista<\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>have read and worked through Chapter 3 in our custom text<span style=\"color: #000000;\">: &#8220;<em>Getting Started with Windows Vista&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Discussion Groups<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>We have formed two groups for the purposes of discussion &#8211; based on your responses to the Poll: <em>What Version of Windows?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Group XP<\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>is comprised of participants who informed us they were using <em>Windows XP<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Group Vista<\/span><\/strong> is comprised of participants who informed us they were using <em>Windows Vista<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Module 3 Activity<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Members of each group will summarize the chapter in our custom text related to either <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Getting Started with Windows XP<\/span><\/em><em> or <\/em><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Getting Started with Windows Vista<\/span><\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Each group member will create a new discussion topic with your group discussion area<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>one post<\/strong> that identifies and discusses <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>key point\/concept<\/strong> from your <em>Getting Started with Windows <\/em>chapter<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Your posting must be <strong>unique<\/strong>, in that it <strong>cannot<\/strong> <strong>duplicate<\/strong> a key point already posted by another member in your group:\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>As the name of your discussion topic, use: <em>Your Name &#8211; Title of Key Point<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Feel free to post comments to the key points posted by others, especially if you:\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Have a revelation that links a couple of key points that have been posted<\/li>\n<li>Can elaborate on an explanation for an existing post<\/li>\n<li>Are able to provide an example or experience of how a posted key concept can or has been applied<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Each of you needs to <strong>complete<\/strong> your <strong>key-point post<\/strong> to the appropriate group, <span style=\"color: #800080;\">no later than<strong> <\/strong><strong>Thursday<\/strong><\/span>, in order to give your classmates time to <strong>read<\/strong> and <strong>provide feedback<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800080;\">no later than <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Sunday<\/span>!<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>At the end of this group activity, we will have a useful summary of each of the <em>Windows<\/em> chapter<br \/>\n&#8211;
