the technical issues, the design challenges (to move from thinking in text to trying to think visually and <span>kinesthetically<\/span> and &#8220;tell a story&#8221;), and the potential for increased engagement, creativity, motivation and collaboration.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1.\u00a0Learning How To Author a Multimedia Story with <em><span><span>SlideRocket<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given that I have used a variety of\u00a0 graphic presentation applications, I understood the basic concepts of creating slides in <em>SlideRocket.\u00a0 <\/em>New tasks that were fairly simple to learn included: adding Flash interactive learning objects, recording audio narration for individual slides,\u00a0publishing a &#8220;public&#8221; presentation and inviting people to view the pre-release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The documentation was light and at times incomplete, and that caused quite a bit of frustration as well as\u00a0wasted time and effort.\u00a0 A few times the system froze in the process of saving and then the Flash interactivities did not work properly.\u00a0 Still a few bugs and features that don&#8217;t work as expected!\u00a0 I had to remove some of the interactivities and some of the audio narration, because they seemed to conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, harder than learning new software and additional Web 2.0 features, was trying to think as a visual, auditory and kinesthetic (haptic) learner.\u00a0 If I took the text-based content away, how would I explain the concepts?\u00a0 I still have not mastered this aspect of designing with <em>SlideRocket<\/em>, but I&#8217;ve made a huge first step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Choosing This\u00a0Particular Tool<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After reviewing over 60 Web 2.0 Tools, I purposefully selected this\u00a0particular presentation tool\u00a0due to the following functionality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Teaching &amp; Learning:\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to embed\u00a0<strong><em>flash learning activities\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>interactive media <\/em><\/strong>and video<\/li>\n<li>Option\u00a0to add audio narrative per slide or background music\/sound track for the\u00a0entire presentation<\/li>\n<li>Streaming audio and\/or video speed presentation and remove barriers of long time delays to download a\/v media or poor quality &#8211; chopping media presentations<\/li>\n<li>Highly portable presentations &#8211; ease of use and low demand on learner&#8217;s local computer system with no hard drive space consumed and no requirement to\u00a0download the presentation, media or software files.\u00a0 This removes barriers for learners completing online courses at work or on other computers where file downloads are not permitted!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Collaborative development for\u00a0multiple authors\n<ul>\n<li>Potential to share a presentation with others in your organization and\u00a0specify who can use\u00a0(view, print, share) and who can edit the presentation (update, modify and re-use)<\/li>\n<li>Development assistance through history and rollback to previous versions<\/li>\n<li>Exportable\u00a0to various formats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sharing: Use and Re-Use\n<ul>\n<li>Potential to\u00a0publicly share presentations via a URL or as an embedded media element in\u00a0a web site or blog<\/li>\n<li>Ability to invite\u00a0individuals and\/or goups\u00a0(via e-mail) to an asynchronous\u00a0review of a presentation (not publicly published)<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity for groups of\u00a0up to 50 individuals to attend a\u00a0synchronous meeting\u00a0to collectively review and discuss a presentation (a private viewing or publicly published presentation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Options to\u00a0check statistics and track number of viewers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Impact of Tool on Design <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This tool had an impact on the\u00a0manner in which I\u00a0told the\u00a0story of <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>How Homeostasis <\/em>is maintained via <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Feedback Systems and Feedback Loops &#8211; <\/span><\/em>the design process was\u00a0different from simply authoring content\u00a0using text\u00a0to either\u00a0display on the screen or\u00a0be presented via\u00a0audio narration!<\/p>\n<p>Background: Students in the\u00a0BIOL151 course\u00a0must learn many new terms, definitions, and processes prior to entering the Bachelor of Nursing degree program.\u00a0 It is a challenge to transform a course based on a drill and practice instructional approach to fully online teaching and learning that engages learners.\u00a0\u00a0To assist learners,\u00a0we developed\u00a0illustrative\u00a0media and flash animations demonstrate concepts throughout various\u00a0modules.<\/p>\n<p>Story Redesign:\u00a0 To tell a Web 2.0 Multimedia\u00a0Story of\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>How Homeostasis <\/em>is maintained via <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Feedback Systems and Feedback Loops\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(a topic within BIOL151), I\u00a0selected <\/span><em><strong>SlideRocket<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>which allowed me to\u00a0<strong>embed<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>flash learning activities\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and <em><strong>interactive media<\/strong> <\/em>within the presentation delivered via the web<strong><em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>This allowed me to shorten the\u00a0amount of text-based content and enhancing engagement with content by\u00a0telling the story through\u00a0interactive learning objects that\u00a0provide\u00a0ways for learners to engage with\u00a0self-assessments,\u00a0learning activities\u00a0and interacitve\u00a0media.\u00a0 The addition of\u00a0voice-over narration will\u00a0further enhance this multimedia story and extend appeal\u00a0to additional learning styles.\u00a0 Overall\u00a0the number of text-based screens that learners have to read and process has been reduced\u00a0by more than\u00a050%, and visual appeal has increased immensely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Was it the right tool?\u00a0 This type of approach is appropriate for the identified target audience and the learning outcomes of this course.\u00a0\u00a0I believe by learners engaging multiple senses and\u00a0interacting for guided discovery of key concepts followed by completing interactive learning objects for self-assessment, learners will experience deeper learning than they would through a more passive delivery approach.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Suitability of <em>SlideRocket\u00a0in My Online and Mixed Mode Teaching<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Would I use <em>SlideRocket<\/em> to produce materials for learners in the courses I teach?<\/p>\n<p>I would not use this type of tool or approach to teach an entire &#8220;lesson&#8221; or online &#8220;module&#8221;.\u00a0 However, there are times\u00a0where it would be beneficial\u00a0to interject an interactive learning object after a few screens of content presentation,\u00a0so learners can have an opportunity to\u00a0interact with the content in a different manner, and apply new concepts and receive immediate feedback.<\/p>\n<p>There is no functionality for self-tests in Moodle, as there is in WebCT,\u00a0 and learners really like the ability to check their understanding of\u00a0new concepts before proceeding.\u00a0\u00a0Embedding\u00a0a\u00a0Web 2.0\u00a0multimedia interactivity, illustration or story would be a great way for\u00a0a quick checkpoint.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Impact of Student Access to A Multimedia Story-Telling Web 2.0 Tool such as <em>SlideRocket<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If learners were given\u00a0access to this\u00a0type of web-based authoring tools, I believe they could quickly and easily learn to create multimedia stories,\u00a0as the development environment is very visual and intuitive.\u00a0 It is easy\u00a0to add picture, flash animations, video, audio clips of sound, music and narrations, shapes, charts and tables.\u00a0 With these elements learners\u00a0could be much more creative than developing in a text-based environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Learners would have increased motivation and development would be more &#8220;fun&#8221; due to the social aspects of this Web 2.0 tool.\u00a0 Learners\u00a0can work collaboratively with classmates on\u00a0course presentations, they can invite Instructors and\/or classmates to review a draft prior to publishing their presentations.\u00a0\u00a0Each can contribute components and build on each other&#8217;s work, then\u00a0share and exchange presentations with whomever they choose.<\/p>\n<p>The potential use this tool provides for\u00a0collaboration and exchange is promising.\u00a0 The ability to share developments could expand the\u00a0re-use of course materials and promote new derivations from knowledge building, thereby assisting with long-term sustainability related to the production of sophisticated learning objects and other multimedia.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>For the Record &#8211; Things I\u2019d Like to See Added to <\/strong><em><strong>SlideRocket<\/strong>:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>More learner control over the audio narration &#8211; ability to stop and start, rewind, fast forward, replay a specific range.<\/li>\n<li>More learner control over the navigation from screen to screen &#8211; ability to go to the end or beginning quickly, or to a specific slide.<\/li>\n<li>The script of the audio narration is included in the notes section of each screen, yet there should be an option for learners to be able to read the notes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alexander, B.
