Introduction to Technology for Organizing & Presenting Information<\/em> is a 16-week course, divided into eight (8) Units: <\/em><\/p>\n

Weeks 17-20+<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Course site remains open for learners to review each other’s <\/em>Final Project<\/em> <\/em>and Reflection on Learning. <\/em>Course participants can continue to communicate, post message to discussion forums, chat and post private reflective as well as public blog entries. This assists learners as they progress to the next courses in this fully online diploma program. There is on-going communication, connections and support as this site becomes the space for the Online Learning Community<\/em> to continue.<\/p>\n

Unit Organization<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Each Unit<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>is associated with a specific application, i.e., Windows XP or Vista, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc. <\/em>\u00a0A Unit<\/em> is divided into several Instructional Topics<\/em><\/strong> (<\/em>SCORM Modules), each associated with a specific chapter(s) in the custom textbook, plus a variety of online activities, communications and assessments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The structure of each Unit<\/em><\/strong> includes the following components:<\/p>\n

        • Each Instructional Topic\/Lesson <\/em>within a Unit <\/em>is a SCORM Module that includes the following types of screens and components:\u00a0\n

          • Overview<\/strong><\/em> of key concepts and the module outcomes related to the specific chapter studied\/<\/li>\n
          • Topic-Specific Reading<\/strong><\/em> –<\/em>for preliminary and longer chapters, topic readings<\/em> will refer to set of pages within a chapter; moving then to requiring a specific chapter per Instructional Topic <\/em>plus associated web-links.<\/li>\n
          • Commentary<\/strong> <\/em>and Supplemental Resources<\/strong><\/em> <\/em>– For each concept introduced in the text chapter; Instructor provides a debrief and links to additional relevant information to provide learners with the opportunity to view the content in a variety of formats and from different perspectives. This also encourages self-directed learning as each learner may select a path of learning beyond that provided by the text and may engage in some related guided discovery.<\/li>\n
          • Learning<\/strong> Activities<\/strong> <\/em>and Walkthroughs<\/strong><\/em> <\/em>– Scattered throughout each Instructional Topic <\/em>these <\/em>provide an opportunity for learners to check their understanding, before proceeding to additional new concepts. Learners appreciate being able to break up their studies with hands-on interactivities or labs<\/em> that provide opportunities for learners to apply what they have learned to date, practice implementing what they know so far, test their knowledge and understanding, and receiving immediate feedback.<\/em><\/li>\n
          • Authentic Example<\/strong> <\/em>or Real-World Story<\/strong><\/em> – <\/em>Illustrates how new skills and knowledge have been applied in the real world…and asks provocative questions for learners to consider as they reflect on their own situation and how they might apply what they are learning on the job, at home or school or in whatever context they need to use a PC.<\/li>\n
          • CheckPoint!<\/strong><\/em> – Provides an opportunity for learners to check their understanding through online practice questions, quizzes, interactive media and simulated software practice in myITlab <\/em>and the Publisher Companion Site <\/em>associated with each chapter of the text.<\/li>\n
          • Topic\/Module Conclusion<\/strong> –<\/em> Summary of key concepts links to any relevant online resources that provide for further or more in-depth learning about the topic\/lesson content, and a review of the learning outcomes associated with the specific topic\/lesson and how these have been achieved.\n

            • Note: a Class Discussion Q&A<\/strong><\/em> <\/em>is open per Module\/Unit and learners can at any time post any questions, comments or concerns to this forum and receive quick-targeted feedback to specific questions.                 • Supplemental Online Resources<\/strong><\/em> – <\/strong><\/em>Multimedia presentation re key concepts covered in each chapter and links to the Companion Study Guide, <\/em>provided by Publisher, etc.<\/li>\n
                • Apply What You’ve Learned<\/strong><\/em> <\/em>– Practical applications of knowledge and skills introduced in the current Unit <\/em>and that build on prior knowledge and experience. Most Unit s <\/em>will include links to myITlab <\/em>video demonstrations, animations, interactive media (flash animations).<\/li>\n
                • Class or Group\u00a0Discussion<\/strong> <\/em>– <\/em>Requires learners to post to a class discussion to report findings, discuss impressions and perspectives, or to contribute to some community resources.<\/li>\n

                • Online Quiz<\/strong><\/em> – <\/strong><\/em>Assessment of theoretical knowledge of module concepts; this has a fixed due date and is graded.<\/em><\/li>\n
                • Assignment \/ Practical Application<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>– Production and uploading of a document, presentation, spreadsheet, web page, or a report, specific to the M\/S Office package taught in the current Unit <\/em>(i.e., Evaluating Internet Resources). Type varies, but each has a fixed due date and is graded.<\/em>\n

                  • Note: Class Discussion Q&A<\/em> is open during the entire Unit for learners to post any questions, comments or concerns and is often used for clarification and assistance with the Unit problem set and\/or assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    Multimedia, Communications & Interactivities Inventory<\/span><\/h4>\n

                    Graphical User Interface (GUI)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

                      \n

                      A course GUI<\/strong><\/em> includes a variety of icons, buttons, bullets, and image cues.\u00a0 These GUI elements are used through all screens in each of the SCORM modules of the course and in on the Moodle Course HomePage <\/em>and online components.<\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                      Week 1: Unit 1 – Orientation & Review of Course Requirements<\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

                        \n

                        Media used is predominantly screen grabs and viewlets of the Moodle LMS online learning environment, as well as an orientation video and links to various online course policies, guidelines for communication, schedule, custom textbook information, etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n

                        A variety of Moodle activities will be introduced such as: an Introductions Discussion Forum<\/em>, QuickMail <\/em>to send notifications to the Instructor, Moodle Profile<\/em> updates, completing and uploading “My First Assignment’ to record Learning Goals and Expectations <\/em>and practice using the Assignment Drop Box.\u00a0 <\/em>In addition, learners will complete a Survey\/Quiz<\/em> regarding the first week’s experience, respond to some Choice\/Polls<\/em> about the custom text, contribute contact information to a WIKI, <\/em>meet the Instructor(s) in a real-time\/live Chat<\/em>, and read Course News\/Announcements.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                        Week 2: Unit 2 – PC Basics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

                          \n

                          Media used is predominantly photographs of various types of personal computer equipment (motherboard, RAM, and input\/output devices and peripherals). As well, numerous links are provided to additional online resources that demonstrate various hardware and software concepts. Links are also included to some online tutorials to practice keyboarding and mouse skills, and for self-assessment of concepts introduced. \u00a0<\/p>\n

                          Learners are encouraged to register and enrol in myITlab <\/em>– the interactive simulation site, so links are provided to several animations, demonstrations and quick references to ensure learners sufficient instructions to prepare their systems to start using myITlab <\/em>activities.<\/p>\n

                          \u00a0A variety of Moodle communication tools are introduced to learners during this second Unit <\/em>– to provide an opportunity for individuals to become familiar with the types of activities and communication tools they will encounter throughout the remainder of this course and in the other 19 courses in the HSA fully online diploma program.\u00a0 Online activities include contributing to a Class WIKI <\/em>and to a Community Glossary<\/em>, creating and posting a private Blog Entry<\/em>, posting questions and answers to a Class Discussion Q&A<\/em>, booking an appointment to check in with the Instructor(s) via Chat, <\/em>completing an online Quiz, <\/em>responding to some class Choice\/Polls<\/em> about computer specs, plug-ins, etc.<\/p>\n

                          Note:\u00a0 A table of media described for weeks 1 and 2 is included as Appendix A. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                          Week 3: Unit 3 – Getting Started with Windows (XP or Vista) & Basic File <\/em>Management<\/strong><\/p>\n

                            An interactive video introduces Windows XP <\/em>or Windows Vista <\/em>(learner’s choice).\u00a0 Media used is the SCORM Modules are predominantly screen grabs of Windows, menus, dialog boxes, drop-down lists, and GUI elements <\/em>involved in various Windows <\/em>procedures.\u00a0 As well, numerous links are included to additional online resources that demonstrate various Windows <\/em>concepts and comparison of XP to Vista. Links are also provided to some online tutorials to practice navigating and managing multiple windows, basic file management commands, and zipping files and folders, and to some self-assessments.<\/p>\n

                            A variety of online activities and communication tools are used, including: responding to Choices\/Polls <\/em>re system specifications, Windows <\/em>version, M\/S Office <\/em>version, etc., Contribution to two WIKIs <\/em>(one for XP and one for Vista), posting both private Blog Entries <\/em>to their Learning Journal <\/em>and public entries as a reflection on their choice to study XP or Vista.\u00a0 Learners will post questions and answers to a Class Discussion Q&A<\/em>, attend a web-based conference\/webinar that will demonstrate the more difficult concepts introduced in this Unit, <\/em>and in will address questions posted in the Class Discussion Q&A <\/em>and contribute to a Small Group Discussion Activity <\/em>to summarize the chapter on either XP or Vista (which ever they chose to read), and will complete the Unit <\/em>with an online Quiz.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                            Week 4-6: Unit 4 – Word Processing & Word Basics

                              Media used in each of the SCORM Modules in Units <\/em>4-7 are predominantly annotated documents, viewlets of short procedures, and screen grabs of Applications, ribbons, tabs, menus, dialog boxes, drop-down lists, and GUI elements.\u00a0 <\/em>As well, links will to files of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc., will demonstrate examples completed as per specifications provided.\u00a0 Several links are included to additional online resources that demonstrate various M\/S Office Application <\/em>concepts, tips, tricks and traps, as well as options for using OpenOffice <\/em>or other Office Suites.<\/em><\/p>\n

                              Most multimedia and interactivity is provided throughmyITlab <\/em>for video demonstrations, multimedia animations, interactive media and simulations of software tasks.\u00a0 myITlab <\/em>will provide opportunities for practice of skills and processes and for completion of online activities related to the specific M\/S Application <\/em>being learned – a minimum of one per Instructional Topics <\/em>in each Unit.<\/em><\/p>\n

                              Communications will continue to be used to develop the learning community and learners will use a variety of tools during Units 4-07.\u00a0 <\/em>They will attend webinars for live interactive “walk throughs” and demonstrations of how to complete some of the more difficult concepts associated with specific applications <\/em>being learned.\u00a0 During this time, attendees can ask questions and receive immediate feedback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

                              Learners will continue respond to class Choices\/Polls, <\/em>book appointments during virtual office hours to check in with the Instructor(s) via Chat, <\/em>post both private Blog Entries <\/em>to their Learning Journal <\/em>and public entries \u00a0to the class regarding their on-going learning experiences, and post any questions, comments or concerns to the Unit Class Discussion Q&A.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

                              Each Unit Wrap <\/em>will require learners to complete a scenario-based project through myITlab<\/em>, then complete and upload to the Assignment Drop <\/em>Box a practical application of the skills and knowledge they have learned related to a specific M\/S Office package.\u00a0 Each Unit <\/em>will complete with an online Quiz.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                              Week 15-16: Unit 8 – Putting It All Together<\/em><\/strong> – Course Wrap & Integrated Final Project<\/em><\/p>\n

                                Media used during this Unit <\/em>are predominantly motivational and to draw attention to important comments and instructions.\u00a0 A re-used of media from all Units <\/em>will be included in the Course Wrap Summary-Review<\/em><\/p>\n

                                Learners post any questions, comments or concerns to the Integrated Final Project Class Discussion Q&A.\u00a0 <\/em>They will have several opportunities to attend webinars for a real-time summary\/review of course concepts, and live questions and answer sessions with immediate feedback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

                                This Unit <\/em>will complete with the uploading of the Integrated Final Project <\/em>and each learner posting his\/her Reflection on Learning <\/em>as a private blog entry and excerpts they wish to share with their classmates, to Moodle Forum <\/em>for a final class discussion.<\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

                                Weeks 17-20+<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

                                Once all Integrated Final Projects <\/em>are received and marked, they will be posted in a community space for course participants to review and provide feedback and encouragement – learners marvel as they review these artifacts that demonstrate how much they have learned since the course started!\u00a0<\/p>\n
