Final Project

Final Project

Our final project was looking at the areas of Potential Orienteering Map Sites in Greater Vancouver. The way we organized how we would approach this topic was firstly making sure everyone in our group was in the same lab section. I felt as though that was an important aspect for this project if we wanted the final presentation to look good because we would always have team members present. Once the teams were formed we quickly created a Google Docs and divided the work amongst four of us.

It was interesting to come up with a project to do because we were given the option to do it on anything, as long as it followed the guidelines. We ended up choosing Orienteering, which is a European sport where people would navigate through various map courses to the final line. I never knew what this sport was before this project and it was really neat to find out that the players go through various obstacles like forests, roads, rivers etc. when competing.

The techniques that I learned from this project was obtaining data from external sources. We have done data exports from the G:Drive and get DataBC before, however we got our data from the Greater Vancouver Orienteering Club website. We searched the already existing Orienteering maps in Greater Vancouver and got numerous points on a map, where we then took the data and inserted it into excel. From excel we exported the information to ArcCatalog where we created a new layer from it. It was really nice doing this project as a group because we were all fairly new with the program and everyone contributed to important aspects of the lab that allowed us to complete our map concisely and in a timely manner.
