{"id":165,"date":"2016-01-12T15:32:53","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T22:32:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mpendree\/?page_id=165"},"modified":"2016-01-26T20:44:08","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T03:44:08","slug":"significance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mpendree\/iquiry\/significance\/","title":{"rendered":"Significance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>\u201cThe illiterate<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> of the 21st century will not be those who cannot<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> and relearn.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 -The Futurist\u00a0\u00a0Alvin Toffler<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lead From Here - Learners to Leaders\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/104548282?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>\u201cResearch shows that SEL has positive effects on academic performance; benefits physical health; improves citizenship; is demanded by employers; is essential for lifelong success; and reduces the risk of maladjustment, failed relationships, interpersonal violence, and substance abuse&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>(<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Elias, 2006, p.10).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Regardless of who you are, what you do, your age, gender, race;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">everyone benefits from social and emotional learning (SEL). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I believe that to successfully develop socially and emotionally competent individuals, it is crucial to target youth as soon as possible. Gergen states that <strong>now, more and more people are getting a secondary education, however there are less jobs,<\/strong>\u00a0therefore, there is a need to equip children with the <strong>life tools<\/strong> that, with the <strong>right implementation<\/strong>, can prepare students for their <strong>dynamic futures<\/strong>; <em>\u201cThe illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn\u201d<\/em> (2014, pg. 58 ). The BC&#8217;s new curriculum home page further adds to this idea and\u00a0states <em>\u201cBritish Columbia\u2019s curriculum is being redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering\u201d, <\/em>which further emphasizes this contemporary and imminent issue<i>\u00a0<\/i>(BC&#8217;s New Curriculum, 2015). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We\u00a0as educators need to prepare students for the world that they will be graduating into; a rapidly changing and dynamic world. In order for our students to be the \u201c<em>literate of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century<\/em>\u201d, it is crucial that we shift our view from a teacher centered approach for learning, where students are viewed as an empty vessel that needs to be filled, to a more <em>person centered<\/em> approach, involving students in the lesson planning process;<em>\u00a0a life planning process<\/em>. By empowering students to get involved with how, what and why they are learning, they will be more engaged in their learning, participation will increase,\u00a0resulting in\u00a0a greater opportunity to develop social and emotional skills. By empowering students to make their own choices, we are introducing them to real life situations that require them to be responsible decision makers; to become effective leaders of their own life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I strongly believe that educators, regardless of their area of expertise, class sizes, socioeconomic status and demographic, can be strong influences and promoters for social and emotional competence; in every educator, there is a leader. It is important to note that educators are not limited to teachers.
