Linking Assignment #3: Mode Bending – Sandra Vena

Summary: Sandra chose to create a video for Task 7 as she re-examined the contents of a bag. She had her husband pack a bag based on a character with an established background as a travel vlogger. In the video, Sandra blindfolds herself and tries to guess what each item in the bag is. Once she has identified each item she then attempts to identify the persona of the bag’s owner which she identified as a commuting professor.

Reason:

I chose Sandra’s post for mode-bending as it was the same modality as mine for Task 7 yet with differences in application and approach. My intention was to try to remove as much text and language literacy as I could from my video to make it as easily accessible as possible. Sandra revisited Task #1 from the point of view of the stranger – interpreting the objects and coming to their own conclusions about the background and literacies possessed by the bag’s owner. I found her twist of doing everything blindfolded to be very engaging as it forces her to focus deeply on the identity of the object before guessing at its purpose. She makes an interesting point in her reflection discussing how the blindfolded exercise relies on a lot of gut reactions to make a judgement call about the objects and the persona of their owner which may or may not match a more in-depth reflection.

I also chose this as a contrasting piece to my video as Sandra describes her choice of modality-bending to be one that is outside of her comfort zone.  Her video is a static single shot with no cuts nor (I am assuming) any post-processing or editing on another machine. I personally find video to be a comfortable medium to work in which highlights the literacies I have acquired in this area. I engaged in multiple literacies over this project with story-boarding, shooting, and editing on my PC.
