Linking Assignment #4: Voice-to-Text Task – Kirsten McKinnon

Summary: In Kirsten’s Voice-to-Text task she examines two separate voice-to-text tools (Otter.ai and Google Docs Voice Typing) with varying results between the two of them. In her reflections, Kirsten examines the role dialect plays in various literacies in historical settings as well as the animal world.

Reason:

I have linked this assignment as, although we both chose to examine the Google Docs Voice Typing feature, Kirsten has dived deeper into the technology available with Otter.ai. She introduced me to a tool I had never heard of as an AI-powered transcription service with plug-ins for various productivity suites. Her results were very interesting as I compare them to my own. I had Google Docs generate a huge block of text with sub-optimal accuracy whereas her accuracy seemed much greater than mine. It was fascinating to see the difference in output that the Otter AI generated with punctuation and a sentence structure that, although grammatically inconsistent, flows far more like speech when read. She mentions how many of her sentences began with ‘and’ in her Otter.ai sentences which is common with unscripted speech as we think of new facts or descriptions to add to our story.

Kirsten also chose to supplement her reflection with imagery, bringing another aspect of literacy when viewing her content. I am usually less prone to doing this as I find citing images tedious and will normally simply upload my own personal photos. Our reflections also differ with the examination of language literacies in cultures as I viewed this through the lens of Indigenous languages (appropriate considering my experiences teaching in Indigenous communities) whereas Kirsten shared two interesting view points of Chinese literacy dialects not matching spoken language as well as naked mole-rats establishing their dialects around their hierarchal structures.
