“Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Philip K. Dick

If you like sci-fi, that’s a lot of bang for your buck in one novel. If you’ve only seen Bladerunner and haven’t read its literary inspiration, then Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is essential reading, with a starkly different set of themes to the movie. Blade Runner shows a sympathetic point of view, while the novel shows a distinctly anti-artificial intelligence sentiment, with robots unable to feel or think like humans. In Dick’s world, Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter, sets out to “retire” six escaped androids, while John Isidore assists the androids. The novel explores what it means to be human, contrasting humans with the androids, who lack the ability to empathize.
