Welcome to my web-based inquiry project!

The purpose of this project is to explore and assess the transformation of education that is currently taking place, and how that that transformation plays a role in Technology Education. Schools across the nation are beginning to implement a BYOD program in efforts to keep up with current trends and innovations in education. My research question originated from my practicum placement, teaching Industrial Design as part of Technology Education at Riverside Secondary. Riverside Secondary is one of few schools in British Columbia to implement the BYOD 1:1 program.

BYOD

The Bring Your Own Device program allows students to bring their portable devices into the classroom to incorporate them into their daily learning activities. These devices are typically of modern technology, provide instant access to the internet and can encourage student creativity. Research by Cochrane, Antonczak, Keegan and Narayan (2014) suggest that “the ubiquitous ownership and connectivity of mobile devices coupled with the collaborative affordances of social media…provide a rich platform for creative student-directed learning experiences” (p. 1). The use of these devices already extend beyond the school classroom and into universities and the workplace. Therefore, the logical action is to introduce them in an educational setting at an early age (Cochrane et al., 2014). This website is intended to inform readers of the benefits of a BYOD program in a high school – particularly Technology Education .
