The Transformation of Education
The purpose of this project is to explore and assess the transformation of education that is currently taking place. Schools across the nation are beginning to implement a BYOD program in efforts to keep up with current trends and innovations in education. As stated by the BC Ministry of Education or MOE (2012) “The world has changed and continues to change. An education system designed in an earlier century can’t possibly meet the challenges students are facing now, or those that they’ll face in the future” (p 4.). According to the BC MOE’s 2012/2013 transformation plan, there is a shift in societal needs that is currently happening. That is, to produce citizens who are able to think critically, communicate well, innovate ideas, problem solve, and work well in team environments (BC MOE, 2012). These changes in the accelerating world requires students to be innovators and creators as opposed to consumers
2012/2013 BC MOE Transformation Plan
In addition to the 2012/2013 plan, the BC MOE’s newest transformation plan places an emphasis on future demand for skilled trades workers as well as the importance of technological devices in education (BC MOE, 2013). In short, the future of British Columbia is in need of people who are both technologically literate and skilled in trades. As a result, schools need to prepare students for both these areas. The 2014 BC Jobs Plan’s main goal is to create skilled workers and to fill the expected demand of one million skilled worker job openings by 2020 (BC MOE, 2013).

My Inquiry
My research question originated from my practicum placement, teaching Industrial Design as part of Technology Education. Riverside Secondary is one of few schools in British Columbia to implement the BYOD 1:1 program. I am fortunate enough to be a part of this innovative learning environment that corresponds with BC MOE’s education plans as well as the growing trends in education across North America. This environment has created a significance and fascination regarding this topic. My inquiry question in particular is: How are the use of devices beneficial in an educational setting and how can the use of devices be incorporated into a Technology Education setting without sacrificing the hands-on practicality that Technology Education was intended for?
