Lee<br \/>\nEmail: jeff.cw.lee@alumni.ubc.ca <\/p>\n<p>Mandarin 12 is designed for Chinese learners who have a reasonable fluency in Mandarin listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course furthers the learners\u2019 Mandarin language competency by exposing them with regular reading, writing, speaking, and listening opportunities. Students will have opportunities to participate in many fun, interactive, student-centered, and engaging activities which immerse them a Mandarin speaking environment. As the course progresses, learners are expected to speak Mandarin with correct pronunciation and intonation, to write cohesive writing assignment, and to have a deeper understanding of the language. Students will also develop their appreciation for the complexity of Chinese language.<\/p>\n<p>What you need: (Please bring them every day!)<br \/>\n\uf0d8\tEasy Steps to Chinese, Book 8, Beijing Language and Culture, University Press<br \/>\n\u2013 Will be distributed on the first week<br \/>\n\uf0d8\t3-ring binder with dividers<br \/>\n\uf0d8\tPencils + Erasers OR Pens + White-Outs<br \/>\n\uf0d8\tOther relative materials that will enhance the course<\/p>\n<p>Units We will Cover:<br \/>\n1.\tGraduation from high school (2 weeks)<br \/>\n2.\tFood, travel, and culture (3 weeks)<br \/>\n3.\tSocial Media (2 weeks)<br \/>\n4.\tChinese educational system (3 weeks)<br \/>\n5.\tGlobalization (3 weeks)<\/p>\n<p>Learning Outcomes of this Course:<br \/>\n1.\tCommunicating<br \/>\n2.\tAcquiring Information<br \/>\n3.\tExperiencing Creative Works<br \/>\n4.\tUnderstanding Culture and Society<\/p>\n<p>\u2003<br \/>\nEvaluations:<br \/>\nYour mark will be given based on the following distribution:<br \/>\nDictations &#038; Quizzes\t10%<br \/>\nAssignments\t\t50%<br \/>\nPresentations\t\t10%<br \/>\nMidterm Exam\t\t10%<br \/>\nFinal Exam\t\t20%<\/p>\n<p>Expectations: <\/p>\n<p>1.\tAttendance: Be here every class. If you have to miss a class, you must have your parent\/guardian\/homestay notify the office the day that you are away, with a supporting note such as a doctor\u2019s note. It will be your responsibility to see me and make up for any missed quizzes, tests and labs on the day of your return.<br \/>\n2.\tBe On Time: Quizzes will start at the beginning of the class. I expect you to be in class on time and ready to do them, and not disturb other classmates by being late.<br \/>\n3.\tRespect: There should be only one person talking at a time. If someone (your classmate or I) is talking, please stop talking and listen. This also include using the language in a respectful way.<br \/>\n4.\tCheating &#038; Plagiarizing: I will not tolerate any cheating and plagiarizing in this class. First offence everyone involved gets zero. Second offence everyone involved may be asked to leave the course. Please note that even in a group work, each member should not have exactly the same written work.<br \/>\n5.\tCellphone &#038; Music Players: If you use them when I am talking or before you finish your assigned work, I will take it away until the end of the class. Same rule applies if your cellphone rings during class. Repeat offenders will have their cellphone taken away until the end of the day.<br \/>\n6.\tIf you need extra help: Make arrangement with me after class or send me an email (jeff.cw.lee@alumni.ubc.ca). Don\u2019t leave it until the day before chapter test!
