Mollusks live in the ocean, in rivers, lakes, and ponds. They also live on land but they like cool, wet environments on land! Think about where you have seen slugs or snails living in Canada &#8211; does this seem correct?<\/p>\n<h3>Different kids of Mollusks<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-443\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/11\/snail-front.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/11\/snail-front.jpg 420w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/11\/snail-front-300x286.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Snails<\/strong>! Snails have large shells on their backs. If they are in danger they can pull back into their shell!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-440\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/11\/calamari.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Squid!<\/strong> Fast <em>predators<\/em> that live only in the ocean. Squid are very smart and the giant squid in the largest <em>invertebrate<\/em> on Earth &#8211; growing to over 12 meters! Octopus are very similar to squid, but they have 8 arms and no tentacles. They are very smart with great eyesight but are deaf! Their blood is light blue in colour.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-442\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/11\/sea-clam_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"337\" height=\"214\" \/> <strong>Clams<\/strong>! Clams are animals that are completely protected by their large strong shells. Yes they can move!<\/p>\n<h3>Characteristics of Mollusks<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The word, \u201cmollusk\u201d means soft, and mollusks are just that. They don\u2019t have skeletons or exoskeletons (no bones!), but are <strong>squishy or soft!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>All have (or had) shells<\/strong>. Octopus and squid have <em>evolved<\/em> and <em>adapted<\/em> to a different life, so their shells are almost gone.
